would like to have a 10 or 14" pistol barrel in 45 caliber, but would want 458" instead of 451-452" dimension. The 45/70 seems overbore for 'short barrels'.
Solution? PS,,might have to go 375 Win or 358 'something'.

You will not get a better 'Hammer' in a 14" barrel than a 45-70! :shock: For deer/bear/hogs to 150yds it will everything you ask. 300-500grs of instant death. :eek: Of all the hogs I watched shot last year in Tennessee, TC 45-70 sucked the lifed out instantly. All the hogs were killed, the 45-70 did it with authority!! I thnk the375 winchester is very good, but the choice of bullets that will work at a TC's 14" velocity is limited. The 45-70 can be tailored to any game you want to play except real long range.

couldnt say it any better myself,agree with topgun.the 45-70 is a 150 yard sledgehammer!my contender 14" bbl is my favorite for deer and wild boar. :money: just adding my 2 cents.

Alan the 45/70 IS a 458 bore dia.I agree with the other posters about it being a sledge hammer. It does have recoil also. I have used 300 grain loads to ease the recoil,and moderately loaded cast bullets up to 525 grains on ground hog to deer with great success. Smaller dia. jacketed bullets will not "bump up" to fill the bore and givepoor accuracy.Try putting a couple of layers of plumbers Teflon tape around these IF you must try them. I would stick with the 458 dia bullets from any maker though. jh
