Southern Music
« on: June 15, 2009, 10:53:22 AM »

I shared with Southernbygrace a few weeks ago a website at www.wmnf.org where you can listen to bluegrass music. the bluegrass show comes on tonight (monday) at 7 PM eastern and lasts 2 hours. Tom Henderson is the host of the show and is a real southern gentleman from Petersburg, Va.

  I hope y'all enjoy it.

All their shows are kept in an archive for a week. They also have a Sat, morning show.

The station is going to be having a fund raiser in a few weeks as they are self supporting. Even though they have some programing that I find EXTREMELY distasteful I do like to support the Bluegrass shows. Sometimes they'll offer as a premium a chance to go into the station and set up your own show. I've been thinking that would be a great show if you could play two hours of Civil War memorial music.

Tom has thought about doing that several times but I think he has had opposition from within.

Maybe he could get away with it if he called it something like 'Popular Mens Tunes of the Early 1860's'.  I mean hey, seems like everyone else is playing the 'word' game these days. ::)  JR

I'll also post a link to my favorite local station.  Unfortunately, I don't think they archive, but you can listen live online.  They have three shows that are really good, 'Mountain Morning' which is bluegrass from 6-7am M-F, then on Saturday they have 'Goin' Across the Mountain',which is 8 hours of bluegrass from 11a-7p. And on Sunday from 3-6 they have 'This Old Porch' which isn't really bluegrass, but still very enjoyable music.  Check it out,
 JR

Rusty is right. WMNF is pretty cool when they have a free hand with the music. The tape Rusty sent me was recorded on Memorial Day and had some really good older tunes (Civil War) and some wonderful newer (Patriotic) tunes as well.

Rusty, you remember me telling you about the tape cutting off midway through the last song on the B-Side? I figured out who that was... Barry Scott and Second Wind. I believe he was with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver but recently struck out on his own. Anyway, his mandolin player, Matthew Munsey, is a friend of mine. He's only 20 years old! Their banjo player, Zane, is only 15! You can check them out on YouTube. I love to see the younger folks getting involved in bluegrass. And for Matt and Zane to be rubbing elbows with the Greats is a really Big Deal! Even Doyle Lawson's new band is younger fellas.

JR, I gotta check out your station, too. Sounds like they are giving folks every opportunity to catch the "Good Stuff".  ;)

Good stuff guys...

If you like to hear young kids play you need to check out the Bluegrass Parlor Band.http://www.myspace.com/bluegrassparlorband

Cory and Jarod Walker have gone to Nashville to play with the big names. They live about 6 miles from me and have two CD's out of their own. You can find a link to their site (Corey and Jarod) on the myspace page.

They like to play really fast stuff right now, I guess it's the kid in them. They remind me of Kentucky Thunder.
