Handi addiction
« on: June 15, 2009, 01:35:04 PM »
a while back, I was alright. Then i got involved in this handi thing....i just did it again. Picked up a 308 barrel from Tim,thinking its a used barrel, after it gets here i can spiff it up,maybe paint it or something,it'll need to be fit to my receiver(more fun) etc. Well, first off it got here in only two days so i lost out on that period of anticipation, you know waiting around for it to get here...then i unpack it to check it out and it's,like brand new,not a scratch, blueing is perfect, already got a scope base on it so i can't order one of those and install it.Then i think "i'll get my stuff out and polish the bore"....no way,the bore looks like a mirror. I drop it on the receiver i want to use and the darn thing locks up first time i close the action...headspace is ,well,zero...so no fitting to be done.In about a year i have added four rifles...i'm already thinking it's probably a lot better to have each barrel with it's own dedicated receiver and furniture, can't have loose barrels just lying around by themselves....and i'm kind of thinkin i outta have at least one barrel in a caliber that the factory doesn't offer(there goes another 3 hundred bucks at least) and of course that custom barrel will need it's own receiver and maybe some custom stocks. Does this ever really end or am i a goner....or what?    thanks for the great barrel, Tim  ;D

Zoner

I asked the same and the answers were sit back and enjoy it.  I now have a handi that I will have more than twice what I paid for the original rifle in it.  It is a GREAT addiction.

YEP.

I need more, I finally have all of my barrels on dedicated actions, (some needed fitting sorry you didn't get to do that Zoner) Trigger jobs done on them all and all sorts of stock styles and finishes, Eleven so far with at least three more factory calibers I want (Prolly more) and I think Wayne is gonna get to do a rebore for me t .327 fed or a stub job and at least two other stubbs I would like, The sickness spreads and I love it.

BTW I just bought a Ruger single six in 6.5 " .32 H&R mag that I am gonn have fitted with a .327 Fed cylinder, Therefor I need a handie to match.    Kinda like a .32 maximum. ;D

If you want to break your addiction- just send your rifle back to Illion for repairs. One time will cure you. >:(

It's a cheap hobby by comparison.  I know this old guy who has one of about every Dakota model ever made.  I guess he must have about a quater million worth of rifles.  Handis are cheap by comparison.  Make sure your other half knows how frugal and thrifty you are.  ;D

Glad ya like it Mike, hope ya get it shootin good as quick as everything else went!!  ;D

The barrel is just as I got it from Longtom, all I did was clean up the chamber face to fit it to one of my frames and remount the scope rail with torx screws in purple Loctite after lapping it to the barrel.

Badnews; do you have any ideas on heaviest bullets and velocities in a 327 max rifle yet?

I would classify it as an affliction, not an addiction.  Addicts can go to meetings and quit, I'm not sure this can be stopped...

No info on rifle loads yet but there is a 135 grain bullet  that has been pushed to 1300 to 1400  FPS out of the ruger sp101 with a three inch barrel, I hope that is true cuase that should mean about 1800 to 2000 maybe out of a carbine, Speer is making a 113 grain gold dot and Cast performance is makeing a 115 gr LFNGC LBT style that should be sweet. 8)

I think the heads up on the adiction is when you get that second frame, I am almost there but holding strong.  However if I had a second SB2 frame i would be taking my Handi to Wyoming with me. HMMMMM

I am HOOKED.  Have 23 of the rifles, and 3 shotguns.  It is cheaper than a girlfriend, at least that is what I tell my wife.  And at my age, it is probably more fun than a girlfriend, and for sure a lot less hassle.
