Why are my brakes still squeaking?

I know little about cars and trucks. I do know when you hear your brakes squeaking it is time to change the pads because they are down to the sensors that make them squeak. This lets people know to change them before you get into the roters. Well my trucks ( 98 Chevy K1500 4x4 with the 4.3 Vortec ) brakes have been squeaking since I bought it a few months back. I have to have it inspected by the end of the month so I had the front pads changed this past Sunday. The guy that changed them said they were just down to the squeakers. There was still a decent amout of pad left. I was there when he changed them so I do know the new pads are on the truck. Why are they still squeaking? Could it be the back brakes? Do back brakes have squeaking sensors? I think my next move is to replace the back brakes. They are the type that have drums. What do you guys think? Thanks Dale

I am not sure what u joints are but it only happens when I step on the brakes. When I let up off the brakes it quits. Dale

Dale, go to any auto store(napa, autozone, advance, pepboys,etc,etc) and tell them to give you a pack of the grease that goes on the back of your brake pads. They usually keep the small packs up at the counter for about $1.50. Its hard to believe that if you apply grease to the back of your pads it'll cure it, but it does. Yeah your gonna have to take the pads back off and coat the back of the pad with the grease. The squeaking is actually a high pitch chatter that'll drive you crazy if you don't take care of it. dale the anti squeak brake grease would be my first shot at fixing it. Also its kind of a waste to pull your pads off and not change your rotors and drums too. There not that expensive and if groved will cause squeaking too. Also you need to seat those  pads in. Take it for a ride and drive about 55 and break hard. Do this about 5 times with plenty of time imbetween to allow the breaks to cool completely. Some of the materials they make pads out of these days are hard and tend to be slow to seat in.

Dale this is hard to explain, but make sure the inner round part of the rotor (where the lug bolts are) is not rubbing on the innermost part of the pads. I have seen this alot lately, I've had to grind a few thous off on some.

You may well have disc brakes on the rear as well as the front. If so they will have the wear indicators too.

No my back brakes are drums for sure. When the guy changed out the front pads the roters were not groved and really did not need turned. I talked to another friend that does this for a living and he asked me what type of pads I put on. I told him the cheap ones from Napa. He said cheap pads sometimes do this. I am just hoping the quite down. Next time I will buy the middle grade brakes. I really don't think they are going to quit squeaking until next time I change the pads though. I already have about 600 miles on these pads and they still sound the same. Dale

If the guy installing them got dirt/grease on his hands and touched the pad that could also be a problem if so when you put the "grease" between the plunger and pad back go ahead and brake clean the pads to be safe .
