I guess I'm disturbed this morning.
« on: June 17, 2009, 03:03:15 AM »
I just came in from shooting the .357 Max to compare performance of Max, Mag and .38 ammo.  In the middle of the shooting, I looked up to see a Doe standing on the 200  yard line on the range.  She was there last evening as well.  Before I stared shooting this morning there were crows and gulls in that same area, and before I fired, a Turkey Vulture came in.

They cut the alfalfa yesterday, and I'm sure she had a fawn stashed on the field and it was killed in the cutting.  She is still there, very agitated.  Silly, I guess, but it really bothers me.

That is sad. Unfortunately deer aren't like dogs where you could bring them home and adopt
them. I have seen pics on the internet of a family that adopted a little fawn whose mother
had been killed. It seemed to get along with everyone in the house including their dogs.

No worries Pete my friend.  In fact I'd say that is the true mark of a great hunter and conservationist.  I think we all get too caught up sometimes in the blood and guts of things that we really forget how much we enjoy watching these great creatures of beauty that God has put here for us.

It's funny how compasionate animals can be... even the wild ones.
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

I agree, I hate to see the number of fawns killed each year when they cut hay in our area.  Always makes me sad.

My grandfather has in the past hit deer that was bedded down while cutting, it messes him up too. Nothing wrong with that my friend, i hate to see it as well. I am just glad it's not something I witness very often.

On the sentiment, Me to. I shoot mostly at paper now. In the woods it is more fun to see what will come by next and how close it will get. I like deer cooked in all sorts of ways and family and friends keep me in more meat than I can eat.

I'm with you Pete.  Can't stand to see an animal suffer.  Grew up on a farm and it always saddened me to see an animal caught while mowing hay, even foxes that got in the hen house.  I'd always stop to put them out of their misery and try to watch and stop if I could.  I eat what I hunt except for varmites and don't want them to suffer either.  Yer just bein a real man Pete.  DP

Breaks my heart this sort of stuff as well . Kangaroo's are sort of our native equilivant to your Deer . I have had to destroy a Joey kangaroo who's mother has been killed many times , doe Roo's store embryo's and are always carrying young , they can delay the development of the feotus while the other one is weaning and when conditions are good give birth soon after the previous is weaned thus every dead doe's pouch must be investigated for a young one . Don't understand how anyone can not feel at the death of any animal - I love/need to hunt but the end result tugs at my heart strings .

We started cutting and rolling hay here last month, I love to deer hunt as much as the next guy, when I am cutting a feild I am running the tractor in high range and all ways looking to my right side, when I see a fawn laying down it's to late, they will not get-up and run, they just lay there and when that 8' disc mower hits them it's to late to stop the tractor, same with young turkey, I hate it but there nothing I can do to stop it, we are feeding about 100 head of cows and they have got to eat in the winter.

Thanks guys.  It would be nice if the idiots at PETA could understand that we hunters are compasionate people.  I know when you're on that tractor seat, there's not much you can do.  Even if you see him, it's too late.  They are camoflaged.  "Mom told me to stay here, and I'm doin it."

That's one thing that non hunters will never understand - most hunters I know have more compassion and feelings for animals than the average non hunter.

I was raised to hunt only what you eat & only the amount you need (except varmits) & I passed this on to my kids. It really pisses me off when idiots kill animals just because they can. Years ago in Alexandria, La, the zoo had a good herd of whitetails in a large enclosure. There was an old buck that had been there for years & each fall he'd grow a fine 10 pt rack. On night some idiot went in there & killed the buck. All he took was the head/neck just for the rack. He was caught when he tried to get it mounted, but only ended up getting charged with criminal tresspassing & destruction of public property. Around our place, we plant a foodplot all year for the deer & go through 100lbs of bird feed a month. My wife & I sit on the porch & enjoy watching "our critters".

I work in the wildlife field and fawn mortality in my part of Texas can be over 75%, remember that most white-tailed does twin and place the fawns in different places trying to hide at least one from possible predators.  It is natures design to compensate for this high death rate, but to me there is nothing as cute as a baby deer.

We had a neighbor that hit a pregnant doe with a car, the fawn was saved and raised by the guys family, it wasn't confined and answered to the name of sugar cube. You could pull up to the house and hold out your hand and he would eat sugar cubes as fast as you could hand them out. For almost seven years they raised him with cattle, he even stayed in a barn at night. During deer season they painted his antlers orange along with his sides. Rarely did he stray far from the property, and know one knows exactly how it happened but Two years ago a guy brought him in, orange antlers and all into the deer registration station. Can't do nothing to the guy because its not legal to keep deer capitive but he sure had better not show up around here for a long while..........

In FL it's illegal to adopt a fawn.

I have two cabins in the woods that I live in. The little cabin is only 12 X 14. I built it first to have a place to stay in until I built the larger cabin. Sometimes I hike back there and take a quick nap. Today when I woke up, there was a spotted fawn that walked by the window and laid down. I couldn't see it again in the grass till the doe came along and the fawn started to nurse. I watched them for about 15 minutes until they moved further into the woods.
The grass is actually higher than the fawn is tall. Neat to watch. I feel sad when anything bad happens to natures creatures and I come across it every week in my travels.
Last year I watched a black bear go after a fawn and the doe put up such a racket that the bear left.
Never a dull moment in the woods.

Every year in the spring I go out and watch wildlife.  I love seeing the baby Moose following the Mama around.  It bothers me to see a Grizzly or a wolf pack go after the babies  Usually they only get one, and most Moose cows have twins, but it still bothers me.

Remember when I was a kid my Grandfathers would have us run out ahead or the mules, or horses, pulling the mower.  Our job was to find the baby deer and show them to him.  The mules would stop rather than step on a fawn, or pull the mower over one.  The horses would not.  People don't use mules anymore, and tractors don't stop on their own.

We hit one last year while cutting.   It really bothered me.  The sound it was making just about made me cry.  My brother shot it in the head and then laughed.  That bothered me worse then the fawn itself.

Ya know this is a good thread.
Let everyone know that most us shooters and hunters actually love wildlife.
Not the "trill to kill".
Personally I don't love being arm deep in blood in a deers chest gutting them out... Who does?
There are reasons we do what we do.
