FINALLY
« on: September 21, 2003, 02:55:49 PM »
Took my coon hound out Sat. night and finally , she picked up a coon on her own and treed it herself . She has worked a caged coon and trail one from a cage but never found one on her own yet . It was sooooo cool . Havent had too much trouble with deer yet but dont want to rule them out yet either . She did run one one night but never opened up and I was able to call her back .

I was on private property Sat. and took my trusty .22 along but only got a glimps of that coon . I never got to shoot it for her , but maybe next time .
Anyhow , I was so excited I had to let everyone know , kinda like your babys first step .

Congrats Dan,make sure your dog gets a milkbone.I have never been on a coonhunt, never wanted to run around in the dark chasing a dog in the areas I trap. They are hard enough to traverse in broad daylight. Tom

Dan, glad you are having some success with your dog. Coon hunting has provided me with many, many great times. Although I don't hunt them anymore,(work third shift) I have some great memories of past dogs and hunts. I'm sure it help keep me out of trouble as a kid. It's hard to run the streets when you spend your nights in the woods. We always climbed the tree and shook out the coon when running in the pre-season. It is not legal to shoot the coon unless he is doing damage. Also saves the coon till the fur is better. Have fun and good luck.

  :-)   Say hey I know jus watcha mean there bud! I've raised & run hounds all my life. Not to many times coon hunting but always on the deer & rabbit. I get an extra special charge from hearing & seeing a pup I've raised when it runs for the first time on it's own.

I wasn't sure what this post was about when I clicked on it. A dogs first coon! Now that is news to get excited about!  Whats your hounds name?
I would give anything I own and anything I ever hope to own if I could have Cotton Joe and Sue May back. They've been gone 15 years, their picture is right here on my desk. I'll never forget about them. I sure hope you enjoy your hound and take good care of him or her. A coon! you just couldn't ask for more. Good hunting and good luck, keep a collar with your name and address on your hound all the time.

How old is your pup Dan?  I just am getting back into hounds, got a walker pup from southern Kansas, and a redtick pup from Utah this fall.  My 5 year old and I have been working with them some trying to get the basics down, the real training will start in april.  Feb. 12th i leave for Richfield Utah to go on a cougar hunt, went last year, but didn't connect.  There is nothing like training a pup, and then having him be succesful in the woods.  I had hounds 15 years ago, my best dog Doc. got lost one night while coon hunting, looked for him for a week and finally found him dead on the train tracks, my other hound Rusty had to be put to sleep when he was 10 or 11 years old heart problems.  Good luck on your pup.  Corey
