Sand bag solution
« on: June 19, 2009, 01:59:53 AM »
I needed some sandbags for bench rest shooting. So I used the bag that water softener salt comes in. The ground here is very sandy so I used that as well. I just filled the bags up about half way using the same hole the salt was poured out from. Then I twisted the bag around like you would the garbage bag, and used some wire to keep the bag closed. Doing it this way lets you keep the carrying handle on the bag.
They work well but I need to replace the wire. I got poked by it a couple times. I'll try a large electric cable tie instead.

I've used sand bags all my shooting life. They work great.

I put sand into a plastic bag then I get my wife to sew dungaree around the plastic. They last a long time.

I've got a commercial leather pair of sandbags filled with lead shot, and a commercial rest (Lyman I think). However, I usually use a couple wooden boards and plastic grocery bags filled with small bird seed. Warren Page wrote a book about accurate shooting a long time ago where he said that very solid bags (like filled with lead shot) generally produce the best accuracy with small rifles, but softer rests work bests for larger, higher recoiling rifles. It seems that the bird seed in bags produces a point of impact more consistant with the rests I use hunting than the bags filled with lead shot, at least for my large rifles.
