There are some interesting cannon in that auction, it's a pity that the collection was stored out doors,

the new owners will hopefully take better care of their prize pieces.

Interesting , You by it then add 43% more for sale cost  and taxes .
Taxes will be the death of free enterprise , guess the underground economy keeps growing .

I wonder what the strategy was behind printing such low estimates for the two bronze guns?..  If anyone expects either one to be sold for numbers like that, I think they will be disppointed.

Maybe because they want to get a bidding war going if you do one of these early on and cause excitement

it may induce others to bid a bit harder than they would on other pieces like the iron guns........ keep everyone waiting

towards the end for the other bronze guns so people don't leave.

And if you live in the US, you're looking at a large shipping bill on top of all that.

Thanks for this post Bob, it was a very interesting read, especially the history behind the Louis XIV 24-pdr bronze naval gun.
I'm guessing that the Holland & Holland mentioned as the previous owners of the cannon, is the famous custom firearms making firm. I had a chuckle reading that when they were test firing the cannon they couldn't take the powder charge up to what they thought would be an historically accurate measure because they were conducting the firing in a residential area.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.
