Ruger 1911
« on: June 20, 2009, 06:49:26 AM »
Ruger is slowly but surely going main stream now. First, a striker fired polymer handgun. Two pocket pistols: one auto, one revolver. An AR15. What do you think folks? Will Ruger come out with a 1911 soon? What's left? A home defense shotgun? :o

Hope not.  Isn't there enough manufacturers of those already?  What else can really be done to them different?  I'd rather see them look at introducing new designs rather than following everyone else and simply branding an existing design as their own.
I do know they did produce a pump-action shotgun years back that never made it much past prototype stages.

I sure hope not. The last thing the world needs is another 1911. or ar15 for that matter. ::)  What I'd like to see is the super redhawk offered in a 4"-5" barrel. A GP100 with ruger scope rings. and an LCR scaled up tp .45 acp or long colt, or both or all of the above? ;D

A Home defense shotgun would be great as long as it had new and innovative features. Better yet, scale up the mini14 and make it a 308. They attempted this years back and it was a failure. I bet it could be done. just thinkin out loud

I own many Ruger rifles and revolvers and would like to see Ruger stick to its core products that have made them successful over the years. A 1911 offering would be something they need to weigh carefully as that market is already saturated.
However , I see no problem with Ruger expanding its line up and captureing a new segment of the shooting market and being successful at it.
Their recent LCP is hugely popular and according to shop owners they cant get enough of them with a huge waiting list of customers.
All the better and I hope they have record profits as a result.

If they ever drop Black Hawk revolvers or other legacy models ,they'll lose me as a customer.

Ruger has always marketed to the cowboy crowd. Their Vaquero is a top seller. There is a cowboy market for a stock 1911. Wild Bunch seems to be the in thing these days. Ruger wouldn't have to change their distribution patterns one little bit to exploit the Wild Bunch market.  I wouldn't be shocked if they came out with a 1911 clone or at least something that looks like a 1911.

Glad I'm not the only guy who would like one of those.  I'd love a super redhawk 44mag in 5" barrel give or take an inch.

Ruger definately has a huge presence in the cowboy crowd because of their sixguns, but they're pretty well out of it after that.  The new Ruger SR-556 is a great rifle from what I've read.  I like that Ruger actually made improvements to the AR rifle and didn't just produce the same old thing with their name stamped all over it.  When you consider the options and upgrades on that rifle they are more than reasonably price for a new rifle especially in this market.

As far as a 1911...  There's enough people out there making them.  What would be the point of even trying to break into that market.

That is what I thought about the AR market but yet they produced one...Go figure.  A 1911 could be next....

Why not?  I'm sure it would be built right and maybe competitively priced.  And another made in the USA sure couldn't hurt.  I have several Ruger products now and have owned a bunch in the past.  And I WILL own several more in the future, wouldn't mind one being a 1911.  DP

yeah the recalls, plus the rising prices in the last two years.... the old man is dead and the corporate partners want their money.  I bet the money isn't going down to the workers making the product though... remember that when you see the recalls

ruger might end up going for quantity instead of quality, I've heard a lot of talk of that lately

Hmmm, inflation happens...raw materials used have gone up a LOT the last couple years.  Witnessed that first hand at my work (steels/metals).  Where the $ goes and quantity over quality...sounds like the Big 3 auto companies.
Check now and you'll find S&W has a HUGE recall going on.

So lets see, you bash the company on multiple angles, yet are considering buying a Single Six Hunter???

I didnt' say they went belly up yet, and if someone tells me that the new ones are lacking then I'll buy a used one (assuming the reviews are good in the first place)

all I did was ask about them.. business practices aside

• Cash generated from operations during the first quarter of 2009  was $10.4
million. At the end of the first quarter of 2009, our cash, cash equivalents and
short-term investments totaled $33.9 million.  Our pre-LIFO working capital
of $96.4 million, less the LIFO reserve of $44.1 million, resulted in working
capital of $52.3 million and a current ratio of 2.9 to 1.  The Company has no
debt.

• We declared a dividend of 8.6¢ per share for shareholders of record as of May
15, 2009, payable on May 29, 2009.

• During the first quarter of 2009, capital expenditures totaled $3.7 million.
We expect to invest approximately $12 million for capital expenditures
during 2009.

Don't see them going "belly up".  Not many companies I can think of that operate debt free at this level.  Simply appeared to be only negative points mentioned in a sort of complaining manner than not.   Have indirect connections with employees and have yet to hear of any employee losses.  Seems they're a company that looks at their employees as people not a number.  As stated previously... "the old man is dead and the corporate partners want their money"  You know this first-hand?
Quantity v quality...they're back-logged enough that they're not really taking on any additional distributor special model orders currently from what I'm told by one that deals with them with that.
