For all of you who are fortunate to draw an elk tag, what will you be using? I am going to use my Swede Husky in 9.3 x57 with Lyman sights and my backups a 30-40 Krag sporter with open sight. My scoped rifle will be a Model 98 in 7 X 61 Sharpe and Hart maggie. Let me know your preferences

So far I haven't decided. Much is dictated by the country I choose to hunt. Usually, I have a backup in the truck and some others in camp. My main choice will be a .300 mag. either Win. or Wea. In addition a model 99 358, and/or a model 700 .375 H & H. By choice much of the country I hunt is very open. So the .30's are perfect. If I don't draw my special unit, I may head north to hunt. If that trip is made, the rifle of choice will be a 700 barreled for .340 Wea. and the .300's will be backup.

Taking a Tikka t3 .300wm, and a VXII 3x9x50 on top. May well throw the Marlin 1895 in the truck as well. If all the shooting is going to be close I'd rather have it than the long gun I think.

I plan to use my mauser 98 in 35 whelan or a browning a-bolt 338 win mag I found used. I might take my 30-06 that has already killed a couple elk or the 12" contender in 375 winchester.

I always use a 50 cal. It has been very successful for the past 18 years. I'll also continue with the the 385 gr Hornady Great Plains in front of 90 gr. of 777. I switched from Pyodex to trip 7 when I moved from a Hawken to an Encore. Drew a bull tag in zone 62 this yr. I'm looking forward to Sept. and the cool mtn air.

I didn't put in for a tag but had I done so and gotten drawn I'd have used my Remington 700 LS in .30-06 which wears a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 scope. For ammo I'd have used reloads using either Nosler 180 PT or 200 AB most likely.

This year i'll be using a 338-06 with 210 pt.
back-up a Rem 30-338 with 180's.

Not going this year but will next in Mt and the following in ID.
My elk rifle is a Win M70 super grade in 338 Win Mag wearing a 4.5-14 X40 Weaver scope.
My back up rifle is a Sako AIII in 375 H&H wearing a Leupold 4x scope. Also is used if we pick a section of woods to drive.
Bullets are plain jane Remington core loked. in 225 grain for the 338 and 270 for the 375. with bullets that big i do not think I need expensive super bullets. If I were going to use either my 308 or 30-06 then I would look to the nosler partitions or swift A frames.

I will definitely let everybody know how it works if I get the chance to use it. I shot a 175 lbs whitetail at 163 yds in mid-stride. He fell over and never even twitched.

A 338 wildcat that fits a Ruger 77 that is a 340wby match.

The .338 Federal is not a wildcat. And I believe that the .340 weatherby has a little more speed and punch.

It's not a 338 fed.
It's a 338 ultra mag shortend .1875 so it will fit 30/06 actions.

It pushes 225 interbonds 3000fps

I'll be using mt custom 700 in 300WM, 168g. Barnes TSX. My oldest son will use a Mauser 30-06 with 150g. TSX. My #2 son will use a Marlin XS 7mm-08 with 120g. TSX. I'll take my 375H&H as a backup with 235g. TSX.

338-06 Savage with Burris FF2 on top. I would use the 338 Edge this year but the stock that I've been waiting over 3 months for is not here yet and I don't think I'll have time for sufficient load development now.

I literally just booked my elk, deer, bear hunt for Idaho in the fall of 2010 minuets ago. I refresh my GBO page and there sits this topic!! WOW...

I guess I'm thinking my primary will be either the 30-06 or the 300mag with 180's. Allthough I could use the 270 or 7mm........or I could use this as an excuse to buy that new Ruger Compact in 308 that only weighs 5.75lbs....

I have four rifles that I call my elk rifles and shoot them all year long right up to hunting season and at the last minute I always use my Kimber 84M in 300 WSM. It has a Zeiss Conquest 3 X 9 X 50 on it and it just seems to fit me better than any of the others I have. They all shoot good enough but I guess I feel better about having the Kimber with me.

For 2010 I think i'll be uing my 338-06 AI. I just had it built, although I haven't started loading for it yet.
