What is your perfect elk rifle? Mine in a Model 98 Mauser 35 Whelan Improved 21 inch medium heavy barrel and a El paso Weaver 4 power scope. Does quite the number

For all around elk hunting, my pick is a .300 it will kill one at 40 yards in the timber or at 400 in the sage brush.

Calibers one either side work well also, the big sevens, do a fine number with a tad less recoil, and a bit less punch, on the upper side the 33's have more punch, more recoil, and in the big cases good range. My 358 and 375 are fine in the timber, but much of the state now has elk in huge sage brush filled canyons that make these two or others like them difficult to hit with a longer distances.

Bob Hagel pointed out years ago, his 7mm Mashburn would drop and elk as easily in the timber as his 35 Win., plus if he got a cross canyon shot at 450 yards, it was no problem. In that case, the brush gun was out of its league.

I have a 35 whelen on a rem 760, the previous owner had a 35 rem rechambered. Fast handling gun, I have a leupold 2x7 with german post#2 cross hair. It is perfect for hunting roosevelt elk in Oregon. I love the 35 whelen, I have taken bear, Elk and Blacktail deer, one mule deer and everything goes down fast.

No such thing, but the quest to find it... that is why gun cabinets have so many slots. If you do find it, please do not let my wife know. I have her convinced I am a poor judge of rifles and their capabilities.

Tikka in 300 winny, Marlin 1895 45/70, Model 70 in 325WSM, Knight rolling block hunter, Wapiti Spike longbow @64#, all woefully inadequite. A synthetic and stainless SAKO in 338winny, that is likely what I've been needing all along. First a perfect Whitetail gun, I understand they can be found with Unicorn horn inlays.

Glad you mentioned the 325 short mag. According to some folks in the know,it was right behind the 30-06 in sales before Winchester pulled the plug on production a few years ago. Don't know where it is now.

I have a model 98 in 35 Whelan Improved. As far as I am concerned, it's well on nigh as a perfect round for the lower 48.

For light packen I use a 338 wacker it shoots 225 3050. Its built on a ruger ss leupold 4.5-14.
for the long shot 338-300 ultra rem 700 leupold 6.5-20 jeweld triggeg lilja bbl 28" custom taper.

My current elk rifles are:
Win M70 super grade in 338Win Mag with a 4.5-14X40AO weaver scope (great rifle and round combo but way too pretty for horse back hunting, and the scope with the adjustable objective is a pain when doing a push through trees and then into open areas and back again.)
Sako AIII in 375H&H with a Leupold 4X
great combo of power and optics. Anything out to 200 yards off hand with me is a hit.
The mountain rifle on the wish list is either a
Rem 700 XCR or a Kimber Montana in 338 Win Mag with either a 3-9X40 Luepold Var X II LRD or a trijicon 3-9X40 Cross hair model.
I think the 338 Win Mag is the perfect round. Good power, accuracy, bullet selection, trajectory, and recoil is the same as 30-06. And the biggest part is that it does not turn meat into jelly like some of the faster bullets do. Same reason I like 308 win for deer, pigs, and other medium sized game.

I use a Kimber 84 in 300 WSM and keep a Kimber 84 in 270 WSM as a backup, just in case. I've had a few jughead horses wreak havoc on rifles in the middle of a hunt and I have actually had clean, one shot kills with both rifles. Just feel a bit more confident when the 300 is in the scabbard.

I like my Browning BAR in 30-06. It was my Grandfather's rifle. I have a number of others, but keep coming back to this one. Good balance, accurate, and lighter. Grandpa got it right.

My general do all rifle is Remington 700 in 300 RUM. 168gr Barnes TSX @ 3370fps has proven itself on moose and would work equally well on elk.

338 Win Mag with a really big muzzel break.
I thnk a scaled down break off the 50BMG rifles would work.
But that would be 1.25 pounds of the 5 pound gun.
1 pound got the scope.
2.75 pounds for the action, barrel, and stock are almost do able.
Great Now I have a new project to figure out.
Anybody know the lighest action that will handle a 338WM? Ruger No 1?

Model 7? But it would have to be 350mag. Don't think they made it in 338. Oh, nevermind. It would be 7lbs+.

I do have a 35Whelen barrel and a set of dies and lots of brass. Just waiting for an action to come along when funds are available. It will be a Rem700. Need? Heavens NO! Total 'I want'......

Hey Sweetwater, about 6 years ago, I met a guy hunting elk with a Persian Mauser, in the mountains near Smoot, WY. He had a teepee up in a camping area. Was pretty cool. Wasn't you was it?

No, I'd have been over at Fall Creek, near Burnt Lake and Meadow Lake from 1998 through 2003, unless I was cruising area 100 or over near Kemmerer. I'm going to try an insert of the "mountain rifle before it's time"
