My dream Contender setup
« on: September 22, 2003, 03:35:31 AM »
Consider this post the meanderings of a wistful dreamer.  I have projects going in too many directions right now to start this one, however, I already know what I want in my contender setup.
I might be compelled to use the G-2 frame, haven't been able to look it over closely enough to say one way or the other.  The barrels though, I pretty much have worked out.
1. 12" .221 Fireball
2. 12" .357 Maximum
3. 12" .41 Magnum
4. 12" 6mm TCU
5. 12" .7-30 Waters
6. 12" .35 Remington

Notice a pattern?  I have owned a couple contenders and one Encore and I have about come to the conclusion that 12" (For Me) is the perfect barrel length.

I could pare this list down to just two calibers, the fireball and the Waters, and be perfectly happy, the rest would just be icing on the cake, and I included them because I was wishing anyway.

So anyway, whay about you guys, I am sure some of you already have your setups in hand, tell me about them, and I would also like to hear any hunting stories you may have.

                                4. 14" 30-30 ackley improved contender

On a side note, one of the other things I would like to see sitting in one of the corners of my gunroom would be a 6mmTCU built on one of the Mini Mark X actions.  Should be easy enough, just take one with the 223 bolt face and rebarrel.

I would be very happy with a stainless, 15" 7mm-08 with wood furniture.

O.K. you might think Im crazy but here is mine.
An original Flatside frame. With a 16"extreme taper octagon barrel. Caliber would be .17 Mach IV or .221 Fireball. (cant decide)
Stocked by Bullberry or Virgin Valley in their style of carbine stocks. Nice walnut but nothing to flashy, satin finish.
And top it off with a Lyman Alaskan scope. All the metal would be bead blasted blue. Kind of a retro carbine.

Hi Norm :D ,

I'd probably choose the 221 Fireball cartridge.  I own an XP-100 in it and find it a tack driver :-D .  If I ever shoot-out the barrel I'll will rebarrel in 221 again except for a 14incher.

Just my 2cents

My list starts out like this:

17Squirrel (1/2 size Hornet case) 22" SS Bull Contender
257JDJ (257/225Imp) 24" Matte Blue Bull Fluted Contender
7mm TCU 21" Hi Gloss Blue Bull Contender
7mm Mag 26" Matte Blue Bull Encore
338-06 24" Matte Blue Heavy Taper Encore
35Rem 12" SS Bull Contender
405Win 16" Gloss Blue Bull Contender
454Casull 10" Gloss Blue Bull Encore
458Win Mag 16" SS Bull Encore

There are others still waiting my attention, I suppose much like any other disease I will find homes for the homeless barrels... I just can't help myself.  Especially now that my wife allowed this new BIGGER safe in the house with 2X the room of the last one.  OH THE POSSIBILITIES! :-D
