Got a question

I have a Ruger m77 30-06 that i put a Boyds laminate stock on and the gun does not shoot like it did with the origanla ruger composite stock. What would be one of the first things to check. The barrel is fitted nicely with no apparent pressure point it is not floated.I have checked for any positive pressure on the barrell and all point up and down the lenght of it.

I would check to see that the recoil lug is firmly seated back against the stop in the stock. Next thing would be to see if there is some place that is hitting the action when you tighten down the screws, this can bend the action some and cause grief. About the only way to make sure there are no pressure points on the barrel is to float it. Larry

I agree with Trotterlg and add that you should also check the action screws to see if they are contacting the sides of the holes in the stock. If they touch the side they act like a recoil surface and will give poor acuracy. If I was you, I would check the action screws, float the barrel, and glass bed the action. But that is just me. Good luck

The Ruger 77 is a bit difficult to get the action seated square in the inlet. Any torquing of the action will cause stringing of the groups.. Are the groups round or oval? The front screw should be tightened first with the rear next. The action should not move as the rear screw is tightened. Test by holding a finger on the joint where the rear tang and the inlet meet.. The cause can be as small as a front tang inlet surface that is not verticle.. or a high spot in the inlet.

The groups were a vertical oval and with some work of floating the barrel and reliving newly found pressure on the action as GUNNUT69 had mentioned the gun is shooting much better. Thanks to all for your help

Just askin, but do you torque the screws to a specific inch lb on the ruger? I know on the Savage the procedure is to torque the front screw first, then the rear, and the setting is 25 in\lbs.
Again, I dunno.....just askin.

I don't torque the action screws on any rifle.. Wood is compressable material andis alive.. The settings would change as soon as the weather and humidity changed anyway.. but then again what do I know.. The M77 should also have the front screw tightened first but not completely,, the rear next then the front snugged up. I like the front tight the rear just a bit more than snug and the middle just barely snug.. Kinda relative I know but if the bedding is right the screw tightness should have no effect on how the rifle shoots, assuming a floated barrel. Resighting will have to be done regardless. If there are those with a good reason to use a specific setting I'd certainly like to know.. knowledge is always a good thing..

GN,
On my Sabage I have on of those tupperware stocks. They are deader than a doornail, so that's prolly why Sabage says torque 'em to the 25. But I can see why it would make sense with the wood.
But I'm just wonderin......perhaps if you answered a post from my wife? I woke up the other morning with wooden broom handle bruises all over my back. She told me it wasn't her and that the broom must have "come alive" during the night! Hmmmmmm??? Next time....it's gonna be a plastic handle broom.....no more wood ones.

Dave!!
I have always wondered about those bruises too.. Never would have solved it without your insight! I'm goin' out right now and burn that sucka. I bought a really nice fix-r-upper Cugir match rifle the other day and the broom must have gotten really upset as the bruises were really bad for a day of two. LOL
