Where are all the NE outdoorsman from?
« on: June 22, 2009, 02:01:55 PM »
Since this is a new forum and I volunteered to be the moderator I'd like to get it off and running. And what better way than by introducing ourselves. Who knows, maybe you'll even find somebody near you to hunt & shoot with.

So I'll start. My name is Brett Levin and I'm in Standish, ME. It's on the southwest side of Sebago Lake. I've been addicted to the outddors since childhood. As a result I went to college and double majored in Fisheries & Wildlife Management. Since I loved getting new folks into the woods & water I ended up getting my MS in Education to pursue a career in outdoor education. To date my favorite past time is still getting a newbie hooked on being outdoors. I enjoy it all, shooting, reloading, fishing, archery, trapping, canoeing, etc. I spent many years in outdoor education and then had a daughter and became a stay at home dad. It's been five years now and it's the best job I have ever had. My daughter is five and loves the outdoors as much as I do and prefers it to tv. My wife is the bread winner, is amazing and equally enjoys the outdoors. She tolerates me, so she has to be pretty great to do that. Anyways, that's it in a nutshell. I'm always up for going shooting, fishing or hunting or helping out somebody in need of assistance doing any of the previously mentioned. Let's here from you.

Hi Brett, it's good to see a New England forum getting started. My name's Dave, I'm over in Tamworth NH near the Ossipee Mountains. In fact, I do most of my hunting in the Ossipee Mountains. I'm a New England native, I grew up in Mass right along the NH border but moved up to NH about 7 years ago. I love the outdoors and grew up fishing a lot but I didn't grow up in a hunting family so I'm pretty new to hunting just getting started a few years ago.

I love to hunt turkeys, I bow hunt and shotgun hunt them. The same goes for deer, I bow hunt and rifle hunt. I picked up a T/C Contender this year so I plan on doing some handgun hunting. I have a bad back so carrying a heavy rifle gets to me during deer season so I'm hoping the handgun will be easier on my back. I'm willing to sacrifice range in order to be comfortable hunting. I also like to hunt partridges, I have a lightweight NEF 28 gauge single shot that I use. I love to fish for bass, trout and pickeral.

That's great that you can be a stay at home dad, I always wished I could have done that. I have 3 kids, they're not into the outdoors as much as I'd like but I've gotten all of them out hunting at different times and fishing too. I have two daughters and a son. My son is 7 and is just learning how to shoot so I'm hopeful he'll develop a passion for the outdoors. He's already asked me to go squirrel hunting which is good. I told him when he gets enough practice with the .22 I'll take him.

Hello Brett,

I grew up in your neck of the woods and have had a blast chasing game in and around that part of the world.  Off 114 my grand parents started a camp for boys, Camp O-At-KA.  it's just before you get in to the town of sebago.  Any how I was down there this spring hunting turkey, we shot two nice toms over near Gorham.  I live up here in the county, working and running a guiding buisness and working on the side for IF&W doing ADC work.  Maine is one or the greatest places to hunt and fish, in Aroostook County we have some of the best Brook Trout fishing in the world, the hunting is great as well.  I have fished sebago most of my life, what a great lake........My home e-mail is koch5@ainop.com......not sure if you can do that or not but oh well email me.........Pete

Hi, I'm in Berkshire County Massachusetts about 3 miles from the Vermont border and about 11 miles from New York.  Most of my time was spent pheasant hunting, but I had to have my dog put to sleep this past February so this year I won't be able to.  I also spend my time Bear hunting in September, VT and MA, , Turkey hunting spring and fall and deer hunting in Vermont and Mass.  If I ever draw a VT permit I'd like to moose hunt but I have been appling for years nad never seem to get one. I've seen some great bulls while bear and deer hunting.

The moose permit thing is a real challenge to having a great hunt. I have known people who have applied all their life and never got picked. Others have been picked more than once in a decade.

Born and raised in Needham, MA...about 15 miles Southwest of Boston. Moved to Florida in the late 1970's with my parents (me only being 10 at the time). They kept their house in Needham and we traveled back and forth until I was out of college, although they still do. I try to get up to visit every year. Uncle and family in Maine, just outside or Portland.

I grew up in a non-hunting household, in Southwest FL. Although, a friend in high school hunted the Everglades with his father each year. His stories (and pork chop sandwiches) got me very interested in hunting. I bought my first rifle at age 18, 1986. I tried to read and learn about hunting but never met anyone to teach me the ways. So, over the years...23 years later...I've only hunted several times and all have been with outfitters/guides for hogs and exotics. I love hunting but still consider myself inexperienced.

I have a 5 year old son, a 3 year old son and a 3 month old son. I would really like to become more educated and more experienced in deer hunting so I can bring my sons up in the hunting/outdoor tradition, that I didn't have growing up. I have been looking at leases here in FL but have not really found the right one. Too far to go frequently, too expensive, too many members and too little acreage, etc. I guess I should lighten up a bit and try it and I might learn something. But, a 7 hour drive really makes it prohibitive to go more than one weekend a season. Or, $7,000 for a season in way out of my price range...although the education I get with the other members might be priceless, who knows.

Anyway, I recently thought about planning a trip to MA for Thanksgiving with my family and I would try to plan a hunt. My uncle owns property on an island off the coast of ME. And, although he doesn't hunt, he said the other land owners hunt the island all season and are successful each year. It's a big island and I believe only 12 owners. He said that he would introduce me to the others and I could talk about hunting.

However, I'd hate to "invite" myself along, even though my uncle owns the island too. I could try to set up on his land, although he let's them hunt his portion too. Being so inexperienced I wouldn't know where to set up and wouldn't want to interfere with their years of tradition. How should I go about this?

Also, what's the public land situation for deer in Eastern MA and Southern ME?

Thank you!!!

I'm not from NE, but I was lucky enough to visit Connecticut for a few weeks back in the late nineties (that's the 19s, not the 18s ;) ). I thought the area was simply gorgeous with the leaves of all the beautiful maple trees in full Autumn color. It reminded the wife and I very much of Northern Wisconsin. We felt right at home. Nothing like real New England Clam Chowder either. Only thing I didn't care too much for was the narrow State and County roads. We'd love to go back there some day.

I’ll give you a short primer on hunting Massachusetts and Maine if you don’t mind. Eastern Massachusetts has a high deer density and those zones, 10 and 11, give out the most antler less permits. The drawing deadline of July 15th has passed and the drawing was done at Hamilton Rod and Gun in Sturbridge. There will be leftover permits for zones 10,11, 13 and 14. Bear in mind that 13 and 14 are Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Islands. The eastern part of the state is the most congested and finding a spot will be difficult. Public lands are around but you will not have any solitude. This is suburban deer hunting. You are hunting pockets of land in between neighborhoods and settlement. It can be frustrating but the numbers are there. Bowhunting reigns supreme in this part of the Bay State. For most of the state the standard rule is that if land is unposted you can go on it. There are exceptions to this and most of those are found in the eastern part of the state. There are a number of towns that require written permission to hunt private land signed by the landowner or police department. Here is a link to the towns with special regulations. You need a map to get a better idea.

http://macouncil.tripod.com/id28.htm

Southern Maine is different. I have not seen too much in the way of posted land but that is the portion of the state that has the most posted land as well as the most deer. Your uncle lives on a Maine Island? I would jump on that. Most of those island hunts are very successful. I almost want to say that it sounds like Vinalhaven Island. Again, go for it. Don’t let pride get stuck in the way. Ask him a favor.

I will add that leasing is not really done in the northeast. I will also add that both states do not allow Sunday hunting.

Bigbore, that's great information. Thank you for taking the time to post.

My parent's house in MA backs up to 120 acres of town forest. They see deer in their back yard almost daily. Could it be possible that I could hunt right there?

Well, my uncle lives in Portland but owns property on that island. I cannot remember the name of it but it's owners do not live there but have cabins on their portion. There is no power on the island but each landowner has a generator. I know it's off the coast of Central Maine and is not even a 10 minute boat ride from the marina.

Thanks!

Town forest. Hmm. It depends on the town. There is a lot of property that has been bought up for open space. The rule is that it may have old posted signs on it but the state will not take them down. They will have to rot and fall off. I'd check the town regarding the town forest. Also, you can get over the counter antlerless tags on October 5th.

I'm located in central CT near Hartford and there's a good amount of state land within driving distances. But most of it gets hunted pretty hard during shotgun season and the deer often will scatter on to private land.
Muzzle loader season provides the option of hunting nearly any state land and the pressure is much less, but by then many of the state land deer have already been harvested.
There will still be deer off the beaten paths but location can make it a tough chore to haul them out of the woods.
It can also be really tough hunting deer where there's a lot of cover.
State land can be a real challenge to hunt. Not only does being a state land hunter require outsmarting the deer, but one needs to outsmart all of the other hunters too.

Just got back to Florida from spending 10 days in Needham, MA...the mentioned in a previous post backing up to the town forest.

I saw deer on 3 occasions in the yard. One time there were 5 does feeding in the front yard at 10 PM, New Years Eve actually, then worked their way around the side of the house and into the back yard. I was looking out the window about 8 feet from them at their closest. After about 10 minutes they finally worked their way out of view. Those of who hunt in their backyards have given me something to think about till November...I may have to visit again.

How far are your neighbors? I did hear several shots one afternoon in the distance while getting firewood. Sounded like it was near the lake back in the woods...ducks, maybe...don't know...poaching, could be. Anyway, the closest neighbor is about 150 yards from the house. But thinking back...I did hear shots in the distance a lot visiting there in the past and didn't hear about it nor saw police cars. I'll have to check the legality of discharging of firearms in certain areas.

Thanks

Born and raised in Gorham, Me. on a 150 acre dairy farm lots of feilds, got lots of exsperience in shooting long distances, Now reside in Auburn, Me.  I'm a machinist by trade I work in Scarborough making jet engine and steam turbine parts. I'm lucky enough to have a range about 2 miles away I spend alot of time there testing loads and such. I'm a Bow hunter, and a paintballer to boot. I'm pretty much into anything that shoots a projectile and has a trigger. Thanks to my father (who was a small bore and black powder competition shooter) I've kinda always set my standards for my own marksmanship skills and hunting rifles a bit higher then most, but hey it's gotten me alot of respect in the area.

Good morning to all N.E. hunters, I'm Mild Bill, used to be Wild Bill, but a lovely wife, 2 kids and 2 g-kids have mellowed me. I'm a displaced LI, NY boy who lives to hunt. I live in aa active adult 55+ community in NH on the ME border. I "take a walk" every morning and see something. Lately it's been, moose, deer, fox, beaver & turkey. I see them all within a 1/2 mile of the house. Bow season opens 9/15, any idea where I'll be? I hunt both in Maine and NH, as wellas an occassional trip to VT, TN and GA. I still have 2 years before retirement and I plan to do some real traveling then. My lovely wife has already given her blessing on an Alaska hunt. Sebago Lake is about a 45 minute bike ride from me, maybe our paths will cross. Stay well everybody!

Renegade,

I lived in Peterborough NH for a while. Lots of good areas to hunt around there. I haven't visited in about 5 years or so. I miss fishing MacDowell lake and Cunningham pond. Lots of nice bass. I have a great memory of my daughter reeling in a 3 lb. bass on a little Snoopy fish pole.

I lived right around the corner from the basket factory, they're still in business. Peterborough is a beautiful town, unfortunately it's been overrun with liberals from New York and Connecticut.

My girlfriend is a Mainah, I drive out to see her every weekend. She's in Harpswell. I haven't had the chance to hunt out that way yet.
