fox bait question.
« on: September 22, 2003, 09:22:18 AM »
Hey guys, I have a bait question for you. I've been out of trapping for a few years and I'm sort of starting over. This year my intention is to concentrate on fox. I've been trapping mice all summer and was thinking of giving them a whirl in the blender to make a chunky paste bait.
1) Do you guys think this will work as a bait?
2) Should I taint or freeze them and use them fresh?
3) Should I not blend or use whole?
4) Would you suggest adding anything to the mouse paste, i.e gland lure, or other scent? If so can you recommend a brand and where to purchase?
5) should  perservative be used i.e pickling salt?
I realize I've asked a mouthfull of questions ,but I value the information I've read on this forum. Thanks in advance for the help.

I used fresh, frozen mice with pretty good success on coyotes and fox for several years. Lately I've been using Caven's "Minnesota Predator Bait" which is slightly tainted and is mostly mice with other ingredients. I also use his "Just Mice" which are nothing more than blended fresh mice and preserved immediately fresh. I have very good luck with both of these, if that will point you in any form of "comfort" level with using mice for bait.
I've also tainted mice and mixed them with a little limburgher cheese, then preserved that and had a great year on canines with that combination.
I've had pretty decent luck with pickling salt, 20 mule team borax, and sodium benzoate for preservatives.

In addition to what Jim said, why not take a portion and preserve or freeze and a portion to  taint.  That way you will have two slightly different baits.

Now, you still should consider a good lure. I'll recomend Super All Call (you can get this from Boggy).  I've used the coyote and cat version of this lure and it works well.  Asa himself will be a great help.  You can use the lure and bait alone and in combination.  He also has a version with Skunk stink for even more variety and calling power. (I like to plug his lures cause he won't, they seem to work most any where in the country, and cause he let me in on the secret ingredient; DILDO Bird teeth :-D ).  There are other lures out there but I know for sure that this one will produce.

Good to have you join us hope to see more of you. :D

Wacky forgot to add that the lure he is talking about is LENONS.  Asa makes the lure and is the son of the famous HERB LENON.  The lures that Wacky talks about have been around a long time and have stood the test of time.  You wouldnt go wrong in trying Lenons' lures.  Ive used them for  45+ years .  Anymore questions fire away and let yr friends know about this site .  The more the merrier

Gentlemen, (if you don't take offense to that term)
thank you very much for the infomation. Since I found this site last week. I've been on almost every day looking through old posts, great stuff.

Jim- I'm going to give the limburger cheese a try. I find the mixture of mice and cheese to catch fox somewhat amusing not to try it. Now all I'll have to do is keep my brother - in - law from setting off the traps when trying to get to the limburger HA!

Wacky- I'll do just what you suggest, some fresh, some tainted.

Rdfx- Can you give me a way to contact boggy, address, catalog to order some lures? Also, if I'm not mistaken I think I met the older Mr. Lenon years and years ago at a trappers convention as a kid. I do remember the gents name was Herb, as he listened very pateintly as I told him of my grandfather who was a trapper. Thanks again, looking forward to more good advice. Zane

Nope! no Dildo birds in these parts.  Must be one of those rare UP critters.  You'll have to ask Asa where he finds em. :)
