Scope for 500 s&w handi
« on: June 24, 2009, 02:30:16 AM »
I got my 500 handi and received my order from ranger ricks (a++++++).I ordered some of the 440gr wfn and 700gr wfn.Loaded some of the 440gr and finally shot the beast .Does not kick as bad as I thought it would ,more recoil than anything I have shot but I think my 270 pounds has something to do with that.Have not tried the 700gr yet .Did not try that hard to sight it in with the open sights ,my eyes just don't work as well as they used to.So I think I am going to look for a low power scope for it.I have found a few but don't know if they will hold up to the recoil. So far the three I like the best are the Konus Pro Shotgun Scope 1.5-5x 32mm AimPro Reticle,Tasco World Class Bantam Shotgun Scope 1.5-4.5x 32mm Pro-Shot Reticle Matte and the
Simmons Master Series ProDiamond Shotgun Scope 1.5-5x 32mm ProDiamond Reticle Matte.I have a fixed 4 power simmons on my 44 mag handi and have no problems with it.I like the price of the tasco but I no nothing of the kronus.Has anyone bought a kronus scope ?I am thinking that a shotgun scope would hold up better to the recoil.  If I can get this gun dialed in It is going to Canada in august for my bear hunt right along with my 44mag handi. My son told me I was nuts for buying a 500 handi (haha)he must have laughed for five minutes. He will be home on leave over the 4th of july and then to Afghanistan for a at least 15 months and can't wait to shoot it.He is used to his m4.I bet mine kicks harder!!!!!!!
Thanks,
Wayne

You're on the right track with a shotgun scope, just make sure it has good eye relief.  ;) I've got a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 shotgun scope on mine, works great.

I put a Burris short magnum on mine. Works great and plenty of eye relief.

Hi wayne24,
Take a look at the Burris 1.75 x 5 x 32mm Safari Signature Series.  This scope is tuff as nails and the EYE RELIEF is 3.8"-4.5".  I have this scope on a .375 Mauser and it will take the recoil all day long.  Just looked up the wholesale price...$295.

My vote is for a Leupold

I can't afford to shoot anything but a Leupold!   ;D

Consider a fixed 2.5X or 4X ......

Or a variable 1X4X,  2X7X,  or 1.5X5X.  Besides the VX-2 and VX-3 Leupy's, they now make a more economical line in the VX-1's as well.  Leupold makes a couple "turkey" scopes and shotgun scopes'

Would one of those be to your liking?

I would stay away from those cheaper scopes.  You can get an older Redfield, a used Leupold, etc. for a good price that will be dead reliable.

I picked up a used Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 for $230 +tax for my .45-70 BC. Look around and you might find an even better deal. For the heavy recoiling rifles, I would try not to cheap out on optics, especially if I was going on a dangerous game hunt that I paid good money to go on.

May God bless and protect your son, and guide him home safe and sound.

I agree with shotgun scope or a fixed 2.5 power.  I have several Weavers, Redfields, Simmons ect. and they work well with the shorter range guns.  I have the lower power variables on some that reach out farther.  I really like the Nikons and Leupolds, but not sure they are worth twice the dollars of some of the others.  I hardly ever turn my 3X9's up past 5 or 6 unless shooting paper or Prairie Poodles.  DP

Can't go wrong with the recommendations above. I put a Leupold 6 x 42 w/HD reticle on my H&R 500 S&W. I already had this scope available, so when I bought my H&R 500 S&W a couple of years ago that's what I used. Some things I can tell you, regarding my experience with this combination: 1) It's quick to get on target (despite it being a 6 x scope). Soon after I bought it, I had about 2 seconds to get a shot off on a deer about 60 yards away. It was no problem; 2) This scope is tough. I do not fire but 5-6 rounds/year out of this rifle, so I can't really vouch for its ability to resist recoil over the long haul. However, a couple of deer seasons ago, the rifle fell 20' out of my stand in the pre-dawn darkness (no, the rifle was not loaded as this is the last thing I do in my stand once I get everything arranged). When I tested the rifle's zero later that morning, it was off only a little and the sight picture was still clear. It still is clear to this day; and 3) I am 6' tall with average length arms. I installed the H&R 1-piece scope base on my rifle. Even with cutting 1" off of the butt stock, I had just enough eye relief to comfortably use the Leupold scope with my bulky hunting clothes on. This scope has a pretty long eye relief to start with. You may not have this problem but I thought I'd mention it.

I got a 6x42 Burris on mine works good . If I was to do anything else with it it would be to put a 2-7 something on it but it would probly stay set to 4 or 5. Kurt

Well I ended up with the Konus Pro Shotgun Scope 1.5-5x 32mm.I have shot it some .So far so good I have always liked the diamond reticle.Been working up a load for my bear trip with ranger ricks 440 grain wfn.The 500 sure kicks like a mule.My son only shot it once while he was home.He said that was enough. He left for Afghanistan on JULY 14 .Still  in the staging process .At least he has called a few times.
Thank for all the help ,
Wayne
