Ejector not catching case

Hi,

I've tried searching but can't find the answer to the problem my stainless .22 Hornet is having. After a round is fired, the ejector pops and leaves the case in the chamber. I've cleaned and polished the chamber and ejector assembly to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I am not the expert here, so I may make a miscue. I have never heard of a stainless steel 22 Hornet. Is it nickle plated? Back to the ejector - The 22 Hornet is a rimmed case, I cannot imagine the ejector not catching the rim. There should be a small shoulder (or step) at the top of the ejector when looking from the top down. Check to see that the ejector is under the rim when the action is nearly closed; it should be. In fact it should hold the case from going into the chamber; only going in as the action is closed. If it is not, then the top of the ejector is worn off, broken off or it has a wrong ejector installed. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I would think it is an incorrect ejector.  A hornet ejector cannot drop down any, so it cannot slip over the rim unless soething is either incorrect or broken.  Larry

I stand corrected, it is nickel plated. I have to take care when chambering a round otherwise it will slip pass the ejector. The vertical play in the ejector is the source of the problem, but the part looks next to new, no excessive wear or broken pieces. Could the wrong part have been installed at the factory? The ejector channel measures .220" and the ejector shaft measures .180".

First off - Welcome to GBO.

I have a 22 Hornet barrel. I just checked it and there is very little play in it up and down. You have some thing wrong, a missing spring, wrong ejector, broken spring. Read through the FAQ - there is a section on ejector conversions that will show you the parts that go into an ejector. Take it a part and find out what is wrong.

Compared to this one from the FAQ, the slope on the bottom of my ejector is different and I don't have the button on top of the spring.

The button is for rimless chamberings. Stretch the latch spring a little, see if that helps, you can order one from Brownell's but a hardware store spring should work too.

.040 up and down is too much, it should be about .010 or so.  Larry

I'm shooting reloads, but the problem occurred with factory ammunition as well. Stretching the spring did the trick, it seems to work fine now. Thanks a lot for the help.

i've seen this happen alot , cus the owners did not FLS there brass
after it was fire formed to a bolt gun, or other guns
and it affected there extractor system to the point it would not even catch factory stuff.
after the repairs and showing them about FLS.... there happy handi campers now !!!!!!!!
