44 Special Blackhawk
« on: June 24, 2009, 12:53:32 PM »
Picked up my 44 special today 5 1/2" and am very happy with it, just got done putting 40 or so rnds of old WW 246gr WW factory loads (all I had) thru it and it shoots great. Rear sight is centered for windage, trigger needs a little work and the grips could have been fitted a little better but other than that she's perfect! Now to find some dies and make some ammo. Q, does CCI still make a 44 Special shot load? The snakes are out!

Congrats on the new Blackhawk!  How about a picture?

Dunno about loaded 44 shotshells, but Midway has the Speer 44 capsules in stock, product #788584, $7.99/box of 25.

I have put in an order for one and was thinking the same thing with the shot shells.  I have never tried any of them put thought it would be a great think to carry while out and about in snake country.  Internet propaganda says next shipment will be in July so hopefully I will get one.  I however went with the shorter barrel thinking it would pack just a little easier.  Congrats on your find.

I have heard others complain about the grips as well, if I don't like mine I am going to try a set of grips for the aniverserary blackhawk/the new vaquero.  I did see some wood grips made by ajax I think it was for those models.  They should fit as my understanding is that it is the same grip frame.

Just remember that the steel grip frame is significantly narrower than the aluminum ones.  I ordered the Rosewood panels from Ruger and they were very thin, finished poorly and a terrible fit.  Ended up parting with some bucks for CLC grips and am extremely happy with the grip now.  Carey is familiar with the frame thickness issue and compensates for it.  You could get some vulcanized knife handle liner material from a knife-maker's supply house and build your grips up from the back, but the new plastic grips just aren't the same as the original black hard rubber grips.  New ones could possibly be used as rasps to shape a more suitable pair from a block of wood for your piece.

For anyone who canot get one, shop around because some dealers have been able to get hem while others have not.
