My Handis are about to starve to death!
« on: June 24, 2009, 12:54:21 PM »
I'm going to a shoot "down below" next month and thought I'd better order some ammo.  I have 40 dollars worth of coupons for Sportsman's Guide, so I thought I'd start there.  They had ZERO of what I wanted in stock.....not even .22s.  Went to 4 or 5 other ammo web sites and got tired of reading "Out of Stock".  Midway was out of stock on about 80% of everything, but with some compromise, I was able to get 2 boxes each .38 Special, 22-250, and .44 Mag.  Then I went to Ammo Bank and got 1 box .357 Maximum and enough .22s to make a freight free order.  I still need to find  some resonable 158 gr. .357 Mags, 180 gr. .30-06, and 140 gr. 7mm-08.

I have never seen anything like this.

Pete

If you want to go mad then try to find primers.

I've been looking for 3 months.   I'm down to about 200 large rifle and I'm saving those in case I can't find any by deer season.

Ammo, bullets, cases, powder and especially primers have been difficult to find for several months. They are very spotty and they are sold out within hours if a large supply and minutes if a smaller supply. I hear the same story over and over. I am hoping this will be over soon. I should be OK for over a year if I have to, but I do not like cutting it close. in the old days, I would only buy a few hundred bullets or primers at a time, but it was money that held me back, not supply. Now that I am a little more set in life as far as money is concerned, I can't get the components ::) I would still buy a few hundred at a time, but I can not get them locally at all and so I order larger quantities to pay for Hazmat fees and shipping costs - when i can get them.

Pete, you are just going to have to start reloading, but trying to find the components will not be very easy, maybe harder than finding ammo.

All those companies are geared up for the government contracts and sending the bullets to Iraq, Afganistan and now south Korea. I don't think that we will see any quanities of supplies until they end the war. Selling to the government has a higher profit margin than selling the supplies in the USA. IMO

Around here you can find rifle cartridges, but has to be very unpopular to see a box of handgun ammo on the shelf 45GAP, 500 S&W ect.  Primers are gone in 10 minutes if any reach the shelf, most are sold before they come in.  I've always been one to stay stocked up on anything I need, hit the sales and yard sales ect so am setting good on every thing I need.  When the price started going up higher every time I went to the store, I just loaded up.  Now with 6 kids that shoot and another starting with his 22, I can't keep up with reloading.  DP

30-06 and to a lesser degree hunting rifle ammo litters the shelves by me. Even the cheapo $13/box 30-30. In fact, I can tell by the pricing that much is at least 1 year old. Been looking at the same Remington cases of 38 special +p for a year waiting for the store to drop prices from roughly 40 cents a round. Cheap 22 bricks are a pain but 100 packs are everywhere. Small rifle primers are impossible but large pistol and large rifle are not hard to find. Factory 44 mag has been my only challenge.

I attended an RCBS workshop a month ago, and the sales rep told me that the company plans on how much they will make for the year and when they get them made they stop.  Materials are purchased well in advance for the amount needed for production.  Zero inventory production, most companies do it now a days.  They are not going to ramp up production drastically as they would flood the market and then be setting on tons of inventory, not sound business practice.  This was told to me on the QT, so don't tell anyone.  SHHHHHH!  DP

I know what you mean about the online sales. I don't like the local shops around here, so avoid them mostly except to see if they have anything new/used on shelves, but noticed they have been building stock back up in past month or so. Variety and plenty of it, I prefer Sportsmans Guide or Natchez though.

Down here in my part of Texas, ammo is slowly filling the shelves again.  Found 30-06, 308, and 223 ammo for hunting (remington green box soft points), and about 100 boxes of the 223 monarch brass case soft points(which shoot well in my Howa bolt). Prices not too bad, either.  Handgun ammo not too plentiful, though. Now if we just could get some rain here.......

I was driving by a small town today and noticed a store that said "fishbait, guns, ammo, and reloading."  A quick u-turn got me there, and sure enough he had primers.  He would only sell me 400, all he had were magnum, but the price was right.  Now I've got to start over on load development.  Thats ok, I do it for fun anyway, and can't shoot for a while until my shoulder gets fixed.  I've got a nephew that likes to volunteer for sight in duty.

Hopefully, Pete, you can get what you need later this year.  It's been a long dry spell.............

That friggin' stinks! It pretty much tells me that the component suppliers are loving this.
It's almost like the oil companies. Why would the go out of their way to totally ramp up
production and build more refineries? All that would do is add more product to the market
and reduce the price, therefore the profits for companies. Simple supply and demand economics
that they are using to screw us big time.
These guys are milking it so much they are giving it the "blue udder" treatment. They don't
give a rip that you or me can't get primers or other components. It's all about $ in my opinion.
Believe my. I'm not one of those " Oh those evil big coperations" kind of guys. I'm all for a
company making a profit, but when they conduct buisness like this it chapps my hide!
By the way, C.W. that is an awesome setup you have! You totally rock my Friend!
