Give it time..   We'll be down to the generic list consisting of:   .223, .243, 25-06, 270, .280, .308, and .30-06.   ::)

I already wont buy any new Handi's.  I cant stand rimless ammo/guns, and I have all the rimmed stuff available(that I want).

The 45 LC was the only reason that I started back up with handi rifles. although some of the other calibers peak my interest none like the 45LC and the 45-70 which was the two have to haves. Without the 45LC barrel. Im not sure how long my interest will stay peaked. HERE ME REMINGTON!!!!! Guess I will have to look a second hand gun/barrel since I couldn't get one on my frame

I would give them a call Kevin. They may still have some 45LC barrels on hand. Even though many have had a hard time getting in touch with them, and still they don't always give the most "well informed" information. Worth a try if you have already sent in a frame to get fitted.

Aaron,

I already spoke to them on the phone unfortunately. I spoke to a CS after 20mins and he told me that they were no longer available. However they do have the CR rifles available still (drive up sales?) but not the individual barrels. I went through some additional problems trying to get a 30/30 barrel eariler. Luckily I did get the 22 hornet.

Sounds about right. They are probably trying to get cought up on production of full rifles in this cal and are too short to offer them to the accessory program >:( They need a seperate alotment for both in my opinion. Seems like the barrel accessory program gets the left overs most of the time. Sorry your having problems buddy. Keep an eye out for a used barrel ;)

This is ridiculous.  You have the reamers and you discontinue.

They discontinued 1 .22 Hornet barrel, not the 2 others.

I'm not sure what's worse; discontinuing the Hornet or making the twist 1:9.

Maybe I am complaining about nothing, as I have not shot it yet.  I have never had as much trouble shooting lighter bullets in faster twists versus shooting heavier bullets in slower twists, but 1:9 in a Hornet just seems wrong.

Well that makes it a little better. Do you know what barrel is gone. Even with Remington taking over I really like the handi's they are affordable and very good shooters.

The acc barrel list shows what's not available.

Jeff..it is possibly to shoot lighter bullets accurately in a fast twist, NOT possible to do the opposite.  Try a 115 grain bullet in an old 6mm Remington compared to a 55 grain in a new one.  I bet I know which one keyholes.

For me, I grew up using a HR 12 ga shotgun. I spent most of my childhood chasing rabbits , doves, pheasants and ducks with that gun. The only other gun that I had was a single shot sears and robuck .22 rifle. (still have both)  My son is training on a H&R 410 shotgun youth, my personal belief is that by training my son with a single shot not only instills the values that I learned, but the ability to switch barrels and use the same frame that his is already familar with and is comfortable with  trigger pull, creates a easier transition between different seasons/game. Limiting the barrels is a huge disappointment, the .22 hornet is a fine variment round esp for a 9 year old, now It would have to be a .204,223,243?

My father always told me that a true professional hunter did not need more than one shot and someone carrying a semiauto gun was a embarassment to true hunters. personally, I thought that he was just to poor or cheap to buy me the 870 that I always wanted.

Now I own 6 870's ,3 mossbergs, and more rifles than I care to admit, but I still come back to the handirifle... nostalgia, maybe... self confidence in my abilities....yes...personal pride definately.

Now I understand what my father meant, I see the guys that invade our area during deer seasons carrying their rem 7600 rifles, browning BAR, and I shake my head. For me, the thought of having to fire more than one shot is a embarassment.

The only thought worse than handirifles declining in the offerings of choice calibers  is the thought of handrifles being made over seas. That right there would end a long and happy friendship.

The remaining 22 hornet barrels are the 224 and the SL4.  Other than the length difference, anyone know how these are different?

Belive that SL is superlight contour. The other is the standard offering. Youth was discontinued.

In response to the 1 in 9 thing, I believe the only two downsides to shooting light bullets in a fast twist barrel is that it wears the rifling faster and it can spin apart some bullets.

Well, as long as they don't keyhole.... ;)
I understand exactly what you're saying, Ty' and have have a personal fondness for fast twists, long bullets and moderate velocities.  I find that the shorter projectiles are workable in my my 6.5x55s, 7x57s, etc. but I don't use them with the intent of using short, light bullets.  I do appreciate your words of encouragement and, as stated before, it may not even be an issue once I start working up my loads.

My real point is more about the topic at hand though - the diminishing choices caused by manufacturing efficiencies (using the same barrel blanks according to caliber, not according to catridge or only offering a handful of the most popular cartridges), which has been evolving for decades.  And, I have watched this happen for/over decades.  As things get "tight," choices diminish.  As things get better, choices widen again.  Hey, I waited a long, long time for a factory Ruger Blackhawk .44 Special and THAT dream finally came true!  In line with that thought, as Handi-fans, we all have to admit to being a little odd anyway and that means we will have ample opportunity to grouse about not having exactly what we want because "the masses" are out-voting us with their dollars.  I am not suggesting that we just give up though either.  Grouse away!  I certainly will.  It's a right I will not forego and it does pay off sometimes.  When we get what we want, it's been earned and we get a certain satisfaction all the others miss out on.

Even as I have watched this pendulum swing back and forth over time, I do still get nervous when it swings away from my own preferences and I worry about things like the Handi "going away."  30 years ago, you could get an H&R single shot in 30-30, .22 Hornet and maybe .45-70.  Some would say we have little to complain about with the choices today but we should stay vigilant none the less to ensure that we can still get what we want too.  If everyone had a 9mm, a .223, an '06 and a 12 gauge, we would be well-armed but pretty boring and that's not what Handi-fanatics are about.  Not what owning a Handi is about.

Oh, and I will probably still gripe about 1:9 twist in a Hornet even if I get 1/4" groups with 40 grainers.  I mean, c'mon, it's a Hornet, for cryin' out loud. ;D

In .223 AR15's, the thought was that the 1:7 twist (needed to stabilize 75gr+ long range bullets) would make Hornet bullets explode before they reached the target. Should not be such an issue with 1:9 and Hornet velocities.

Thanks, Wreckhog!!I guess I'll go ahead and order a barrel... cheapest way to get that Hornet I've been wanting for years, and might as well encourage the barrel accessory program folks to keep the program alive.

Cheap is relative. A $90 barrel is more like $150 by the time you include insured trackable shipping 2 ways, fitting, tax, hammer extension, etc if you are only getting one barrel. I have 2 places near me that have new but older .22 Hornets with old twist rates in stock for under $230 plus tax. If you can net $130 for the stock and the SB2 frame, you might just want to flip a coin.
