Stripped scope mount threads Question
« on: June 25, 2009, 04:37:54 AM »
I have a contender barrel that some one put too much preasure on the scope mount screws and stripped them out. I am not sure of original screws but think they are 6-40 and I know that I can go to a bigger size if I can find out next size and where to get screws and bottom type tap. We havn no gun smith in my area and will have to fix myself or drive a hundred miles or more to find one. I think 8-40 is the next size up and may get lucky and just have to run in the next size tap as there are no threads left in holes. any one with any ideas on a good fix?

I'm not certain but normal scope mount screw sizes are 6x48 and the oversize are 8x40. The taps and screws you will need are available from Brownells and you will need to drill the base mounting holes larger and recut the counter bore for the larger screws. The tools for that are also available from Brownells... Their TechLine is also a good place to ask questions and their catalog,,,required reading..(800)741-0015

Found a local gun smith that worked for Browning arms for a number of years and has the taps to do the job which are special and require no drilling, that is if the screws are stripped out but you are going to the next size up which is metric and is 8-45.
Thanks for all the input good to know what the original sizes are.

PS- got a call from the smith today saying that the size is metric 1-8-45 now I am wondering if he really knows what he is talking about.

I think he may be mistaken.  Fairly sure those should be 8-40 threads, before they were stripped they were 6-48's.  Larry

Brownell's has an "oversize" 6X48 screw available as well - use it with the "oversize" tap. Sometimes it will save you in a pinch if you don't really want to go to 8-40, I've used it a time of two, once on a contender carbine barrel. They have an "oversize" price to boot but if it gets your tail out of hot water, it's worth it.
Keep your plow share and your sword - know how and when to use them.

The factory T/C Contender screws are 6-48.
Personally, I have had two redone to 8-40's. One was on a hard recoiling 357 Herrett. It sheared the factory screws under recoil. Go with the 8's and you should be fine.
