How Much Daylight Left?
« on: June 26, 2009, 12:08:56 PM »
To determine how much daylight is left before darkness sets in hold your hand out at arms length and place it between the horizon and the sun.  The four fingers will equal one hour. If two hands fit then two hours. One finger equals fifteen minutes.  This method gives us a way to gauge how much time we have before dark and lets us get back to camp while we can see well.

Hi
It works all over the country. Its based on the speed of the earths revolutions.
The earths revolutions can be considered pretty constant for this purpose.
One revolution in about 24 hours. I use it all the time. Try it.

Hi Again
Lets say in the lower 48 states.  Because in the Arctic or Alaska the diameter of the earth and angle of the sun would be different. It works here in the lower 48 states.  It also works in Australia.

My uncle showed us this years ago and it is very accurate in wisconsin. if you know what time the sun set you can tell time pretty accurate. I have won many of dollars betting I could tell what time it is within 5 minutes using this method.

Hi Hoggunner
I have found this to be very accurate also. When a person gets used to using it he pretty well knows what time it is. The sun will give you both direction and time.
