My 700ML
« on: June 27, 2009, 01:38:03 PM »
Last year I bought a really clean Remington 700ML Stainless/Black Tupperware for $225.00.  I put a 2-7X32 Nikon Prostaff that I had in the closet on it.  I have to say that is about the easiest to load & shoot inline I've ever owned.  It shoots whatever I feed it into small groups, goes off everytime, and is a real joy to own & operate.  I consider it to be one of the best hunting investments I've ever made.  I wish it had a walnut stock.

Yeah, I have a tupperware stock on my Savage muzzleloader. It is the only thing I dislike about that rifle.
Got to get a walnut stock one of these days.
Aim small don't miss.

Here's a fun load that I want to work down a little for small game.  This is at 25 yards with a .490 ball, pillow ticking patch, that I soaked in my mouth before loading.  I used 80 grains of Pyrodex RS & a CCI #11 cap.  3 shot group.  Both of these go down the barrel real easy.  I patched with Windex between shots.

Here's a 3 shot 50 yard group using T/C Cheap Shots over 80 grains of Pyrodex RS & a CCI #11 cap.

Congratulations ! You have a superb muzzleloader ! I have one and my sons have one each ( three total) - all blued not Stainless. We use #11 caps or Musket caps. They work well with both. The one problem we had is failure to fire. The first pull on the trigger, it doesn't go off. The second pull and it does go off. The reason was our fault. We 'wonderlubed' the firing pin assembly. The lube gunks up the firing pin assembly enough to slow it down in cold weather and causes a failure to fire. I have since learned to use a dry lube on it only- with no problems since then. The only other caution I have is that you must remove the firing pin assembly and clean the inside of the bolt assembly after you are finished shooting for the day.  I have used only Pyrodex RS (90 grains) and triple Seven (90 grains), shooting sabots 275 grains. The Pyrodex RS gave me better accuracy. I probably should lighten up on the Triple Seven to 80 grains. I would really like to try a non corrosive powder in this rifle, but I have four cans of Pyrodex leftover from an after Christmas sale at Wally World. I do not want to go to shotgun primers due to the many stories I heard about the 'crud ring' residue left in the barrel.
By the way, you can make an extra 'bolt shroud' by cutting up a 20 gauge shotshell hull to the right size and drill the vent hole in in. Use the shroud in bad weather only - as it drives more smoke into the bolt assembly.
Good luck with your rifle --It's a keeper !

Some of the guys are using BH209 in them but you have to use the Canadian made 209 primer conversion kits they sell on gunbroker.  I use the Remington magnum #11s and Pyrodex RS.

Have been testing Blackhorn 209 Powder in my 700 and it is very accurate, but must use a Magnum Primer or have delay fire.

I presume yours has been converted to use 209 primers?

I have one of the last Remington 700 MLS made in .54 cal. I love this gun! Everything I stuff down the bore shoots well in it at 75 yds. From 505 Hydra-cons to powerbelts. It does like loose FFG (110grs.). The bolt is a pain to clean but cleaning guns is something we are supposed to do. I put on a set of Williams Fire Sights  and a sling. I never touched the sights after the initial sighting in. With the hydra-cons every deer has dropped in their tracks. Randy Wankerman gave this gun such a bad review! Makes me wonder about that boy.

Hilbill is right. I have had two 700mls , shooting 209's .They have blowback into the bolt and it must be cleaned or it will malfunction and not pop the primer. I had to recock twice in hunting situations before I figured what was going on. Now I keep the bolts dis-assembled ,wrapped up in bore butter in the off season. I think this is why big green stopped making them. They stay in the safe now unless I hunt somewhere that doesn't allow smokeless powder as I now shoot savage ml's.
