Good recipe for Unique powder and buck and ball loads?
« on: June 27, 2009, 07:53:38 PM »
Looking to maybe work up some buck and ball, and/or buck shot loads.  All I can find on the aliant website is for shot wieghts, and for blue dot powder.  I have a lot of Uniuqe flake powder, but no load data for 12 guage.  I've got a few comercial loads for home defense for my 87 leaver gun, but there expensive and too costly to practice with.  Any idea where I can find load data for Unique powder, and I take it an once and a half is an ounce and a half weather it's buckshot or a single round ball?  The only shot shell reloading I do right now is for black powder shells for matches.

Thanks,
Will

An ounce-and-a-half (Twelve 00 Pellets) is too heavy for Unique. Instead, look at 1 1/8 ounce loads (Nine Pellets or a single .690" Ball). If you hava to have 12 pellets or a Buck & Ball combination, you'll have to use a slower powder. Blue Dot, HS-6 or others.

Alliant or Hodgdon websites. An ounce of lead is an ounce of lead, Birdshot or Buckshot. As far as Buck & Ball, I don't believe you'll find published loads - you pretty much gotta work out your own. Some folks like Lyman's book for loads. 'Reloading For Shotgunners' is a pretty good book.

Thanks, ordered the lyman manuals, hopefully find some starting loads in there.  The websites give me fits though.  Funny as I use them for cartrige loading a lot.
