recharing my AC system
« on: June 28, 2009, 06:21:44 PM »
My AC was blowing cool a few years ago and then i noticed it going warm. We already put the system on a Vacume test, no leaks.  I think i may need a new dryer and Of course Freon.  What other parts could i possibly be needing?

This system is on my 1992 isuzu rodeo 3.1 v6  5 speed 4x4.  It uses R12 and i bought the product ES12-A which i will have to buy R134 valve kit. ES12-A uses less per pound and blows colder than r12 so it seemed like a good deal for $35.  It came with 3 cans and the kit needed to use.

Besides a dryer, what else could there be?

Just be cautious, some of that stuff for old r12 systems is about 90% propane.  If you have a leak, and someone smokes in your car...It may not be a good thing.  I reccomend doing a 134a conversion.  It's not hard and works pretty good. most kits come with the fittings needed and a guage, so you put in the right amount.  I did my niece's 93 Toyota Camry last year and it is still holding a charge.  The main thing is make sure you get all the old stuff out by drawing a vaccum.  This will let you know right away if you have nay leaks.  The only difference is that 134a seems to only really get cold as the car is moving.  I don't know if it is because it requires more compression or what, but that's what I have observed in almost every car I've had with 134a systems...........I miss spell check...

exactly why i wont use r134. that stuff is junk when youre sitting still.  es12a will blow cold all the time. I plan on sucking out the old r12 as soon as i get the stuff bought and ready.  It will be interesting to see how it does.

Never heard of R-12 being mixed with propane and i have been in the HVAC industry since 1972 . Propane is a ref. and close in make up to r-22 . but not mixed . You will find it in cans of spray paint , shaving cream etc. though .

Big block check the low pressure switch if the system has one , find it unplug it and jump it out with a wire . Make sure the system has a charge first so you won't damage the compressor . Most screw onto a schrader fitting and are easy to change . If you change ref. in a system make sure the oil in the new ref is compatable with old oil as it is impossible to get it all out with out replacing coils etc. If it cools at speed but not at stand still you may have a fan problem .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

If you have been in the HVAC industry as long as you state, then you've heard of r-12a which use to be sold to replace r-12 when r12 was taken off the shelves.  I have always done HVAC work on the side and am still license. I even taught HVAC at the local career center to high school students.  I don't work on anything but walk in coolers now, and even I've heard of r12a.  It was a combination of propane/butane.  It is not readily available, but I have seen it on some shelves at older parts stores. As far as 134a not cooling at idle, that is jsut a characteristic of 134a compared to r12.

Nope never heard of r12a . Have heard of OZ-12 and HC-12 , both banned from use in vehicles as the use of flamable gas is a danger if a leak occures . They also don't meet EPA standards .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Sounds as if it is time for a boost for your AC system - don't overcharge as your older seals will not like it.
