Grind To Fit (G.T.F.)
« on: June 29, 2009, 09:52:34 AM »
Bet you thought it was a recoil pad fitting thread!  This is the first Gring To Fit Handi front sight.  It is now .835 tall, probably taller than there will ever be a use for, but it is easier to make them shorter than taller.  Mill off the front blade, cut a slot in the body with a 1/16 inch end mill.  Then silver solder in a tall sight blade.  Mill off the sides to make it perfectly straight up and down, throw it in the parkerizing tank and you are done.  The parkerizing does not stick to the silver, but I guess a Sharpie will take care of that.  We will see how it fits on dieselten's rifle.  Larry

Tim, If you keep your eyes open you might come up on a mini mill.  I bought one for under $200.00 a few years back that runs on house current, and will handle most small jobs.  It will chuck a 3/8 end bit, but has to go slow.  Wouldn't trade it for a gold monkey!  Check industrial auction sites.

Oh yeah, I've been watching Craigslist for quite a while, almost bought a new one a long time ago when Harbor Freight had one of theirs on sale! All of the "good" older stuff is way too heavy for me to get into the basement, so I'd have to stick with one of the mini mill/drills.
