"NRA " on Sotomayor
« on: June 29, 2009, 04:55:35 PM »
Most of the gun rights groups in are against Judge Sotomayor, but the NRA has yet to take a position. What are they waiting for?

Some of the NRA's past leaders have spoken out about her, but where the hell is Wayne L and the present bunch in charge on this?

Even the president of the Brady bunch Paul Helmke, said he was surprised at the NRA and their wait and see approach.

Why are they being so quiet on such an important issue?

I just received a news alert from the GOA and they were praising the former president of the NRA for her opposition to Sotomayor, and urging NRA members to get in touch with present NRA leaders and voice their concern.

My guess is their weighing their options on their "under the table deal making" with the politicians.

Her rulings, on recent cases like the fire fighters case that was just overruled by the supreme court, suggest that she believes and judges that discrimination against one group today is a remedy for past discrimination to another group.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there was no significant written opinion by the Second Cicuit in that case?  I believe only a ruling was issued.

I think she'll be easily confirmed. This is a real test of the republicans, and I fully expect them to fail that test.

Even if she is confirmed, will it really change the present makeup of the Supreme Court? Not much.

You're right.  And I suspect we might even see another change or two on the court in the next few years but I suspect they will all be members of the liberal bloc.

Without a doubt it will not move further to the right. If Sotomayor doesn't get in, there will be others of the same stripe waiting in the wing.

... even still, I'd rather not give up any more seats on the Supreme Court than we have to. I'd actually prefer a centrist liberal to a radical in that seat so it doesn't move much further left. The Devil is in the details, and our legal system is the way it is not because of sweeping radical decisions, but daily little concessions that accrue over time.

TeamNelson is there really that much difference between Sotomayor and the one she's replacing? I don't believe there is, and if the Supreme Court doesn't loose another in the next four years, and the American people wake up, and replace Obama, it might not change that much.

On the issue of Gun Control, no, not really perhaps. But a significant difference is her philosophy ... its subtle, I know, but in legal matters it makes a huge difference. She will have influence on the "language" of everything passed down. Language is what the lower court judges will use to interpret and decide. And she is committed to much more alarming language than her predecessor.

So back to gun control, the SC said basically the Fed can't regulate, but States can. When your state regulates your guns into the furnace it will be because the language of the decision by the SC passed down did not prevent them from doing so.

If you're waiting for the NRA to do the "right thing" I sure hope you aren't holding your breath cuz if you are ya gonna die. Until such time as LaPierre is fired the NRA is NOT a friend to gun owners or for that matter Americans in general.

As long as LaPierre is in positition, NRA will receive no more money from me. He is no longer a friend of the people who put him where he is today. I think he no longer hears the report of a rifle or pistol, but he can hear the sound of a dollar bill when it hits the floor.

They (the NRA) just sent me a big packet trying to sell me insurance. Why don't they use the money they spend on such JUNK MAIL, to fight for the 2nd Amendment.
I get more JUNK MAIL FROM THE NRA, than "any other TELEMARKETER"!

+1

There is a reason that I took advantage of the "free" membership they offered a couple of months back. No money exchanged and there won't be until LaPierre is out as far as I'm concerned.

Amen to that. I get mail at least twice a month and at least two calls a week from the NRA.

Other than your great GOA, and I say that with all the sarcasm I can muster... what is the answer that you have?  What group is actually doing one thing about the second amendment rights, other than the NRA... The GOA can talk all the crap they want, but until they accomplish one thing on there own, they are just that, all talk.. All talk no action..... The GOA is a group for whiners... Oh don't they solicit donations, just like the NRA... It takes money to fight Washington you know.

You seem to have all the answers, why don't you start up a second amendment group and go fight Washington?

The NRA has it's problems, just as any other group, they are not perfect.. But they sure as hell are better than a loud mouth group that does squat.. (GOA)

I certainly don't have all the answers, and I will disagree with the GOA, if they fail the gun owners by  keeping silent on important gun legislation, or supporting gun grabbers. So far that hasn't happened with them, and perhaps it's because they are a smaller gun lobby, and haven't been infiltrated by Liberals in Conservative hides.

I do know the NRA members could make a difference if enough of them raised hell with their leaders on this and other issues.

Right is right and wrong is wrong, and you and I are both smart enough to know this is WRONG!

I don't need the NRA to tell me she's a bigot.

Well said, I knew she was a liberal gun grabber also.. The NRA did not have to tell me.

If the NRA went after every liberal anti-gun person appointed to a position in the White house, they would be bankrupt.... Almost everyone appointed by Obama is a liberal gun grabber.

The anti- NRA members here just have to have a reason to whine. That is just the typical and norm for them..

You realize of course that she's not being appointed "to a position in the White [H]ouse"?  It's just this little thing called The Supreme Court of the United States.  The people who will definitively decide what laws are valid and what rights are inalienable?  You do realize ultimately it will be the SCOTUS that decides if you get to keep your guns or not?  You realize this is the only lifetime appointment in our government?

You realize she will be one of the most powerful people in this country?

I get that you're going to make excuses for the NRA.  I get that you're going to regurgitate their talking points every time someone questions them.  But to minimize their silence on this issue is just making you look bad.  You'd have been better off to admit they made a mistake, but I don't think you can...

OK dukkillr, seeing's how you want to be so correct, yes I understand where she in being considered for an appointment. To The Supreme Court of the United States. But look at all the other appointees that went to the White House in which I was referring too.

I make no excuses for the NRA. Do you really think the NRA is going to stop the wheels that have been set in motion by the Liberals clowns in Washington? If you think so, your a bigger fool than the ones that but Berry Obama in the White House.

As I see it, we are in for a rough ride and with the plan Obama has for this country, we will be lucky if they stop at our guns...

What I find funny, (not really) all the people complaining about the NRA, they don't want anything to do with them, they whine about sending them money.. And then have the stones to ask them what they are doing about anything gun related... Give me a break dukkillr, even if the NRA spoke out, you anti-NRA clowns would still find something to whine about....  You can't keep the baby's happy not matter what..

Your story never changes...  :'(
