CZ 527 Aftermarket Stock?
« on: June 30, 2009, 07:00:25 AM »
I just bought a 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 to rebarrel in 6.5 Grendel. I'd like to get a varmint weight barrel, and I'll be using optics, so it makes sense to get a stock along the lines of the 527 Varmint Kevlar stock. I know the original stock was made by HS Precision, but I heard rumors that they are now being made by Bell and Carlson... Either way, I can't find them anywhere.

They used to be listed on the CZ webstore, but now they have disappeared from there too.

Anyone have any idea where I can find one? Are there other options?

Thanks!

Hooz,

I'd give CZ a call and ask what's going on. I see they also don't have the flush mount clip Model M1 listed under the 527s either. They just put up the new website, so maybe they don't have everything listed yet.

I just got off the phone with Bell and Carlson where I was informed that they did indeed make the 527 Varmint stocks, but every one they made went to CZ, and they're not allowed to sell them to anyone else.

Still waiting on a reply from CZ...

Well... The official reply from CZ regarding the varmint stock was:

Quote
It is available on it's own. It is $285 and $15 shipping. It is currently out of stock. Please try back in 30-60 days.

No wonder they don't want B&C selling them. That's f-ing robbery! $300 for a B&C stock?!

So. Back to my original post: Does anyone else make a good synthetic stock for the 527 action?

Man Hooz, not many options out there for CZ aftermarket components. You might give McMillan or Tom Manners a call and see if they could inlet one for you, but if they could, you'd pay way more than the B&C I'm afraid.

Yeah. It just rubs me wrong to have to pay that much for a B&C stock when a similar stock from B&C for a Remington or Savage (or Tikka, Weatherby or Winchester) can be had for right around $100 less.

And from HS Precision...

We do make a varmint stock for the CZ527. Options and colors are numerous. If you provide a mailing address, we will send you a full-color catalog.

I'm not very familiar with synthetic stocks.  How do you tell if it's Bell and Carlson or HS Precision?  What's the difference between the two brands?

I've got a B&C on my 700, and a H-S Precision on my 527varmint.  IMHO, there is no comparison between the two...H-S is ten times a better stock.  If B&C want $285+, which is rediculous in my opinion...I'd save up a few more bucks and get the H-S Precision. Just my $.02 worth. JR

Dan,

It doesn't appear that there are too many difference in the material used in the two stocks, however the actual process used to make each stock might be very different. The big difference that I can see is that HS Precision uses Kevlar and fiberglass in the form of woven cloth, which is also trademarked by them, in their stocks. Here's what I could quickly come up with as the materials used in each stock:

Bell and Carlson:
  • fiberglass
  • aramid fibers
  • graphite
  • epoxy gel coats and laminating resins
  • polyurethane reinforcement with milled fiberglass

HS-Precision:
  • Woven Kevlar cloth
  • Woven fiberglass cloth
  • Unidirectional carbon fiber
  • Epoxy-based gel coat and laminating resin
  • Reaction injection molded (machine mixed) polyurethane foam

I own and use a few HS Precision stocks and really like them. They just feel right and they are very rugged. HS-Precision claims that "If your stock isn’t strong enough to park your car on, it’s not an H-S Precision." (quote is from their 2009 catalog)

+1 on that Skunk, I shouldn't have said that H-S Precision is ten times better, the quality of the two may be equal.  But I like the way the H-S Precision FEELS 10 times better.  It's the most solid feeling stock I've ever held.  JR

I just bought a take-off laminate stock from a 527 Varmint on GunBroker, so I guess I'll pillar/glass bed that and roll with it for now.
