A Change of "Seasons" in Arms taste.
« on: June 30, 2009, 12:56:38 PM »
Let me say in advance that I judge no one on their choice of hunting weaponry, I am merely acknowledging a reverting back to my roots as I age. I am wondering if any other older gunners are experiencing a touch of "what has always worked". over "latest offerings", as they begin to get older, and perhaps wiser.
I as a young man, was raised on lever action rifles, and single shot shotguns. As a youth both pre-teen and teenager, I had single shot shotguns, single shot 22, and a Model 94 Winchester 3030. It was enough to do all I needed to do. I killed my squirrels, I limited on my dove hunting, and I never knew the difference.
When I went into Law Enforcement, and began to learn, I abandoned the Winchester after several years as a car gun, and of course followed the latest AR15s, Hks, and so on. The pump shotgun replaced the single shot, then the gas operated replaced the pump.
The revolver (357mag Model 19 Smith) was replaced by the 1911, then the 9mm replaced that, and then BACK to the 1911. And today, a Model 60 Smith, with a Tyler T-grip, and Ivory handles is what I carry DAILEY.
After 20 years of L.E. I believe that my analogy of the auto replacing the revolver was dead on. It was never a matter of capacity as much as it was hitting what your shooting at. In other words! PRACTICE.
With my rifles I have now gone back to the lever gun, and stopped at the pump shotgun. They are indeed, and WERE INDEED, "all I ever really needed" in my 20 year career, and also now.
They say: ONCE A MAN, TWICE A CHILD. Perhaps, but as I have stated over the years here at GB, I watched my Cherokee Grandfather whom was a poor, but happy share cropper, hunt with a very old Winchester lever action octagon barreled 22 rifle he found in a cave on a river bank in the 20s, and a single shot shotgun. The man was happy with what he had, and killed what he shot at.
My decisions are easier made since I sold most of my guns. If I can't hit it with a 3030 then it's beyond 250 yards and I need to HUNT CLOSER to the game.
If it is a booger in the house that needs shooting then a double tap with the puny 9mm will not be necessary. I will put an ADEQUATE hole in him with either my Glock 45 (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID) pistol, or my Model 60 Smith and a nice little 125 grain JHP.
Not much to remember, and not much to think about, and my old guns work. Just like they used to before all those gun writers made me doubt those old guns. How bout you other old farts? ;)

DEE. My deer hunting is either my pre 64 winnie 3030 or my sgl bbl H&R SHIKARI 4570, both with cast bullets. Small game is usually a dbl bbl 410 or my 20 ga, sometimes my 22. Never got into the magnumitis that so many seem to adore. I have no use for the so called new and improved calibers. Reckon I'm old fashioned with reloading too, used the same powders over 40 years, can't fix what aint broken. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

20+ yrs Military service, with a tour as an armorer, only served to increase my love of revolvers. A .357, a .22 and a singleshot shotgun is still a lot of fun to shoot. Try splitting a card edgewise; you'll learn alot and not waste a lot of ammo.

We used to light kitchen matches with a 22, broke a lot of them too.  :D :D. So many of the so called improved ctgs are ballisticly almost identical to existing ones. The inventors of these new wonder ctgs are not nearly as smart as the guy that convinces us we need these things. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Like you Dee, I started with the single shot 22's and shotgun. I think my first deer rifle was a Mod.94, and after my hitch with Uncle S, I went wild and bought anything the writers said we had to have to get the game.

Still have some modern centerfires gathering dust, but I primarily hunt with primitive muzzle loaders now.
My favorite being my 62 cal. smoothbore. I hope to thump a bull (elk) this fall with it. The older I get, the less need for toys I have!

I'm with ya Dee. I remember when I wanted a Ruger #1 in the worst way. I finally got one and it's the most accurate rifle I own. I don't know what people are talking about when they say they're picky, mine's not. I've recently started to use my old single shot shogun for just about everything though. Back in a simpler time that's all they used. In fact I'd go as far as to say this country was settled by smoothbores. From the Brown Bess on that's what we've turned to when it was time to get down to business.

I agree 100%. while I am still young (30's) My wife and I decided that bigger is no longer better. We sold our 3,000 square ft house in the city and moved to a little 900 sq ft house in the country.
We went from having cable tv and a swimming pool to barely getting TV reception and we couldn't be happier. Now we grow our own food, both meat and veggies, our food cost is down to about 40.00 dollars a week.

Although I still kept all my firearms, I too have reverted to a more primitive firearm for hunting (handi rifle).

I have several NEF handi's and toppers. Although if something needs a little more, I still have my AK's, AR, and my beltfeds.

H&R/NEF 10, 12,16 20 28 ,410 .243 45 357 45lc. 1919a4, uzi, sten mK 2,3,5 M2HB, 1917a1, ak74(2) amd 65, RPK (2) 11 aks and 50 other guns....

Glad to see it isn't just me!

Started out with a .22 single shot and an IJ Champion and a M94 and a little later a Ruger Blackhawk.  Progressed thru the "firepower" phase with pumps, semi's (handgun and rifle), magnums, etc.

Now I mostly use a Ruger #1 or my M94 for deer, shoot my revolvers much more than my semi's, and use an O/U or one of my single shots for birds/small game.

For whatever reason simpler just seems to be more fun nowadays.

Lets face it. The price of ammo recently, killing a buck is more than just that deer you saw.  I was going to buy a box of 410 shells for pigeons and rats here but at 14.00 per box, I believe I will stick with the .22 shorts for 2.19.

I haven't shot my beltfeds in almost a year. 308 is through the roof, cheap 3006 is gone and I only have 5k worth of ammo in 8mm that I am saving, mostly because I can't replace it like I could 5 years ago.
50 Cal ammo, forget it. I was getting ammo for 1.60 around, last time I looked it was closer to 6.00.

last box of 45/70 that I purchased was 33.00 on sale. 45LC is 29.00 a box and 44 mag was almost 55.00 a box

combine that with a increased cost of living. loss of jobs, noone is going to be doing much shooting.

You fella's have struck a cord with me as well . I now have the firearms I have always wanted but where not fashionable - an 1892 Rossi , a BL22 , S X S 12 gauge and have began saving for a Ruger No 1 in 45.70 though a Trapdoor replica holds an enormous amount of appeal . More to the point I am an archer and bowhunter first and back in the early 90's questioned the direction the marketing merchants where taking the game and set about a remarkable journey in Primitive archery equipment , truly the most satisfying journey I have been on . Now I shoot what ever primitive equipment or fibreglass laminate traditional bows take my fancy off my bow rack .

I cop a bit of flack from my mates who can not understand why I gave up the advantages of modern firearms and archery equipment for the simplicity of my primitive and traditional tackle . They rolled their eyes when I proudly show and tell , I don't bother trying to explain anymore - they'll never get it

I have rebounded into the single shot rifle category from being a lever gun and bolt guy.  45-70 set me up with a beautiful little 357 Mag. Handi-rifle in 22 inch bull barrel and synthetic stock.  One shot, one kill and all ammo is interchangable with my Ruger SP101.

Now I am looking for that combination in 45LC as a companion for my Ruger Super Blackhawk.  Packing a long gun in the same caliber as the wheel gun just feels good and makes common sense.

Well Ive gone full circle, started with a 20 gauge remington 1100 auto, still have it and it is my go to shotgun! went to a bolt action rem 700 still have it. my favorite is a 35 rem levergun. Sold my model 29 44 to buy my youngest a shot gun last year.(only gun i have ever sold) have glock 21 in my truck and next to my bed most of the time. Would be hard pressed to pick between my 44 lever gun and the 35 rem but would prolly keep the 35! Have some handi's but they dont stack up to the lever guns for accuracy, that may be my fault but its a fact!

All that being said the rem 1100 20 ga,  the lever .22 and the lever 35 rem are my keepers with the glock as my belt gun.

Still have a virtual arsenal but those will go to the boys as will everything else!

Had one of the RSOs at the range show me a speed drill for a Smith .38 that got all 6 off, accurately, in less time than 6 from a semi. Said it was an old LEO shooting technique back when my Model 10 was considered "enough." Gave me a new way to use an old gun, and its fun. I'm finding I enjoy expanding my own abilities to maximize my gun, rather than expanding my gun to accomodate my limitations. If that makes sense ...

;)Dee, Well, I am a gunlover of the highest order. While I still like my .300's best, I find myself using older rifles and calibers more and more. A couple of my current loves are a rebarreled Marlin in .25-35 and a model 99 in .300 Sav. Usually, I try to use these on at least a couple animals each fall. While I hunted one season with my dad's .32 spl. I had my grandfathers .30-06 the next season. Used it steady for about 10 years then got on to the .300's. I do plan to use th old 06 this fall some. As I get older and have more time, it is fun to fool with different less powerful rifles. As for shotguns, I had a single barrel for a year, then a 20 ga. pump. Over the years I have had  doubles both styles, autos, single barrels, etc. Now I have gone almost completely to  pump shotguns. While I have auto pistols, my favorites are ones I had years ago, a k-22, a kit gun,  and a highway patrolman. I still have a couple .44's, but seldom shoot heavy loads in any, but will load some .44'ds with heavy loads for my next fishing trip into grizzly county. ;)
