Lot of talk about stockpiling and hoarding ammo these days. Myself, I get a couple boxes of something I shoot a month. I feel about 100-140 rounds of centerfire per cal. (reloading supplies not included), and 2000-3000 in .22 are good numbers for me. How much do you feel you need to have on-hand?

Rather not say but I'm sure there are gun stores with less.

Even doing this you are still coming up with 1,200 rds of handgun and near 500 rds of rifle brass each year! It doesnt take long to get more loaded ammo than you can shake a stick at.
I dont buy any factory loads but componets instead and like to keep them in lot's of 100. I could stop reloading for a long time if I wanted to but usually keep the inventory topped off.

Let's just say Im 53 years old. I could survive to a ripe old age and never pull the press lever again,but what fun would that be?

Those numbers are what I am wanting to have on-hand. I can't afford that much per month. Wish I could. Ammo is not so hard to find in my area, although components are. Esp primers.

i used to buy it by the case for ever gun i owned, but i like to shoot up a LOT of ammo at one time and ammo was cheaper when i used to buy it. now maybe 3 boxs per gun.

Well fellas I officially have the sickness. Went into the wally world looking for running lights for my boat, and bought 72 dollars worth of 44mag ammo just cause it was there! Man asked me if I needed anything and I asked if that was 44mag in the two white boxes. He said yep and asked me if i wanted one. I said no, before I had realized it I said both of them. ( I have enough for an Indian war in the safe at home now) If he had four I woulda bought four! I'm thinking I need counseling! Thats kinda like eating the last drumstick at the dinner table after a big meal just cause it is the last one! Not bragging mind you, I sincerely think I need help! I told my wife to please watch me in the future, and pull me aside and try to break the trance!

yeah, i did sell them all. If i was going to buy ammo now it would be a few boxs at a time cuase it cost so much

I ask at the gun store why ammo cost so much, she told me everone is Stockpiling, hoarding, or whatever you call it ammo and there just no ammo to go around. ammo will go down in cost when people control there fears about this so called " ammo ban" and just keep it real. just the other day a man was buying lot gun that were in .223,7.62x39, or 9mm that fired 30 rounds or more( he must have spent like 9 grand on guns). In his own words " there going to be ban, so i better get them now".

most people seem to forget the older bush ban all the really fun guns and even with the bill clinton ban you still could find and buy M16 and ak-47 with 30+ round mags. i rember the signs " new mags like these are ban by law so you better get them when we have them"

I enjoy reloading more than shooting. A look at my inventory of supplies and ammo will quickly confirm this. I don't consider that I am hording, but I have no idea what my wife will do to get rid of my stuff when I croak.

if yur kids dont want it then sum yung pup like me {44} will buy it fer cheep at a yard sale.i dun teached my son [13] to reload, if he aint got his head up sum yung girls butt id imagine he will want to hang onto what ammo and reloading crap i got.that reminds me, i better hang on a little bit cuz i got a whole lot more to teach him.

There is a book out called Citizen Soilder , it suggest 250 rounds for your rifle or shotgun ( shotgun a second choice ) and 50 for your handgun . Resupply from those who attack you . So that might be a good rule of thumb if you live in a country that is having or expecting trouble .

Personally, for whatever reason I decided I wanted 500 rounds per hunting rifle that I intend to keep for a long time. I'm not really worried about all the SHTF, or zombie's, but I think the fear of a gun ban will keep the price of ammo way above where it should be.

I want 500 rounds per rifle because I think it's more than I'll ever need for what I'm going to do hunting wise. My 30-06 and 44mag are my primary hunting rifles, and I have most of the supplies to put together that 500 rounds for each. I remember when a box of 30-06 was $6 or $7 for 20 rounds, so I'm just trying to get setup now so that in a couple years when it's all $2 per round I'll still have my little stash that I made for less than $.5 per round.

For 22LR I think I've got all I'm going to need or use for at least a couple years. I bought 3 or 4 of the 550round bricks of 22 and I'm happy with that.

call it what yu want, stockpiling, hoarding, whatever.it aint getting any cheaper or easier to find.thats the bottom line.ill not pay inflated prices or patronize gougers, however i will buy all the ammo and supplies i need to last the rest of my life and my sons life. he is 13 now and loves shooting and hunting.not to mention us farm folk are being pushed out of existence and may end up being subsistence farmers.ill hoard whatever i can git my hands on for a resonable price.

The only thing I could use is some LP primers, just 1000 at that. I can wait though. I don't know what guys do with 10,000 primers?

What would you do with 10000 primers , load 10000 rounds maybe ? not that many if you shoot comp.

Never thought of myself as stockpiling or hoarding, just compulsive spending on shooting stuff. I've never spent large amounts, just steady increments over thirty years or so. I am beginning to ask myself, "what will I ever do with this stuff". Now that supplies are short, I'm helping others by not paying high prices for ammo components. Glad I can help.

it used to cost less just to buy case of a 1000 from www.sportsmansguide.com or www.cheaperthandirt.com. Wolf .380 Auto 91 Gr. FMJ 1,000 rds. was 0.20 cents a round for 200$ when i used to buy it. To me it's better to have and not need then to need and not have. But as i said, i used to shoot a LOT.

Target shooters often work up a load using certian lots of componets and a few 1000 would not be alot to have .

On another survival site, they recommended 10,000 22lr rounds, and at least 1,000 rounds for each long rifle and centerfire pistol, reloading supplies not stored in the same place. Also, at least a 2 year supply of food. New MRE's can last 10 years. Traditional canned goods can last 2 years. Vacuum sealed frozen goods can last 2 years, otherwise 1 year. Canned goods can last longer, but they say the vitamens deteriorate after 2 years. Dry goods can last indefinately. If everyone is trying to get this many rounds, then the shortage will last a while.

like ive said before im not really buying it cuz i plan on shooting that much, and i wont be price gouged. buuut it will come in handy around here for tradeing material. ive lived in the stiks long enuf to know that if yu got sumpin the other guy wants bad enuf yu can get a real deal on what he has to trade.a lot of what i own ive traded this or that for, guns, tools, cars,building materials etc.wake up! money is rapidly loseing its value due to inflation. goods will be where its at.

I'm figuring in another 6 months when people start running out of money there will be plenty of ammo. Johnny Carson many years ago made a joke that there will soon be a toilet paper shortage. The next day there wasn't a role to be found in the local supermarkets.

Call it what you will, but before I retired 10 years ago, I realize, things never get any cheaper, so I started buying powder, primers, bullets, 22 ammo, shot wads, etc. in bulk. My goal was to have enough to last me though my retirement with out having to buy much more. I have still bought lots since then, but as far as 10,000 primers. That used to only be a couple years supply if I counted shotgun, pistol and rifle. I don't shoot p. dogs like I used to do. That took up several thousand rounds a years. So since the p. dog shooting has slipped, my ammo is lasting much longer.

My biggest fear is that when I die ,my wife will sell my stuff for what she thinks I paid for it.
