Hodgdon 60% rule
« on: July 01, 2009, 08:07:29 AM »
I've used Hodgdon's 60% Rule to roll some .308 rounds.   (I actually used 87%, which my Remington 700 LOVED!)

Does the same rule apply to IMR 4895?

No Sir, H4895 and IMR 4895 are not the same powder.

Hodgdon 60% rule states:  By taking the maximum charges listed in our 27th Edition reloading manual with any given cartridge and multiplying it by 60%, the shooter can create a 1500 to 2100 f/s load, depending on the bullet weight shown.  The works only where H4895 is listed.  Do not use H4895 in a cartridge where it has not been shown.

Like yooper77 said. Do not substitute IMR-4895 for H-4895. Thats a BIG  NO, NO.
Stay with these loads that are recommended on the Hodgdon Youth Load web site with H-4895 powder.
I have loaded the 7mm-08 with a Hornady 120gr youth load for my grandsons hunting rifle. It is an awesome deer load.
My oldest son also uses the 308 reduced loads for my other grandson & granddaughter with great results.
They have all shot and killed deer with these great reduced loads.
