Hey guys I just thought I would give you a heads up on where to buy your next Catalytic Converter unless you live in CA. My inspection and emissions was up on my 98 Chevy K1500 4x4 at the end of june. The service engine soon light has been on in my truck sice I bought it a few months ago. I took it to my car guy and he told me the code was comming back as a bad Catalytic Converter. I started checking around for one local. I was down right shocked. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o The dealer wanted almost $700.00 for a direct fit one. I checked Napa and they wanted over $400.00 for a direct fit and almost $200.00 for a universal. I checked many auto parts stores and got about the same results give or take a couple dollars. Then a light bulb went off in my head. What about Ebay? Let me tell you I saved a bunch of money. I bought my Catalytic Converter for $67.00 to my door. :o :o ;D ;D ;D My guy replaced it today and my truck passed emissions. ;D ;D ;D I was really worried about it passing. It can cost you a bunch of money here in Pa to get it to pass. >:( What I do not understand though is when he pulled the old one out there was nothing in it at all. You could look right through it and it was nothing but air. No kind of screeen or anything. He said no wonder it come up as being bad. There is nothing in there. My whole deal today with the cost of the Catalytic Converter, inspection and emission testing come to $167.00. I think this is a great deal. ;D ;D ;D When I started looking into getting my truck legal again a month back I though it could cost me many times more. So if you are looking for a Catalytic Converter check Ebay out. It will save you a ton of money. Dale

Thats what i love about my isuzu rodeo. They were smart enough to bolt it on. Needless to say i pulled it down and used a crow bar and punched that sucker out!  No need for that crap.

There would be a need for that crap if your state required it. I think it is all BS and just another way for any state to get money from anyone who owns a car or truck. Dale

Don't tell too many folks about gutting the converter.  For an individual its a ten thousand dollar fine.  For me it would be ten times that.

Folks have been stealing converters left and right of late.  They just gut them for the platinum and throw the rest away!

I did not gut the converter. It was that way when he pulled it out. Dale

Dale, I wasn't referring to you but to BigBlock.  Thats one of those things thats best left unsaid if in the wrong place.  The law applies even in areas where there is no inspection.  Altering any emissions device can result in a $10,000 fine to an individual.  Personally I couldn't care less, because I thing the whole  thing is political, but I do know someone that had to pay that fine.

Knocking out the convert. improved my gas mileage. How can nut cases like Al Gore complain over that? No emissions here so it does not matter in my state.

just a heads up. Dont throw your old converters away when you buy a new one. My son in law runs a salvage yard and told me there worth a 100 bucks to him. Something about gold in them. You can about buy a new or rebuilt one for what they will give for your junk one.

Yeah, we had someone cut through our chain link fence and cut the catalytic converter out of a jeep cherokee we had in our fleet lot.  That was gutsy since it is Federal property with security cameras!  Do you know what happens if you steal from the Federal Government and get caught?  Anyway, we now have new and more security cameras so there are no "dead" spots anymore....

Yep, stealing converters is a big problem at boat ramps here in Texas. They'll hit the parking lot with a lookout and a crook carrying a cordless saws-all. They'll cut several out in a few minutes and be on their way.

you just gotta preempt the criminals ;D

When platnum prices prices were so high I stole my own cat :o from my $800 astro van and sold it on flea-bay for recycle scrap for over $140 now prices are half what the were a year ago and not really worth the effort

Thank god I live in a state that did away with those scam vehicle inspections never mind double overtime scam emissions testing.
