.460 S&W in a 20" T/C Katahdin
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:13:22 PM »
Just spent a couple hours at the range with the .460 S&W in the T/C Encore pro-hunter.
The rifle has a Burris 1.75 X 5 Signature Safari (with 4.5" of eye relief)  ;D  mounted in a Talley medium high extended set up.  The scope has a good track record and has shot 5/8"-3/4" groups at 100 yds. from a .375-06 improved ( .375 Hawk-Scovill) with a Douglas barrel.
After bore sighting and shooting several rounds the rifle was in the ball park at 50 yds.   The .460 loads were in new Starline brass, Speer Gold Dot 300 gr. HP,  40 gr. W296 with Federal #215 Large Rifle Magnum primers.
The three five shot @ 50yds. -groups-, (haha) :o maybe patterns is a better word, were 4.5"-6" :(  Had the Pact Chronograph set up but it only recorded 2 rounds of Heavy .45 Colt.  The weather was overcast gray with about 1/4 mile visability in fog.

The +p+ .45 Colt loads 360 gr. Cast performance with W296 at 1,560 fps. shot into 1.5" groups at 50 yds.  Not sure why the .460s shot so bad but i will try different bullets and powder charges....

I hope you have better luck with it than my oldest son did with his. 300 gr XTPs and Gold Dot hunting loads that grouped well outta my X-Frame Revolver patterned similar to yours outta his T/C Encore pro-hunter.....he too had the 20" T/C Katahdin.  I tried H110, Lil Gun, IMR4227 and 2400, but the only thing we found it liked was reduced loads with 2400. After six months he got frustrated and traded it for an AR. That said, I only ever shot it with Hornady factory 200 gr. ammo, and that shot fair. My son played with the reloads, so it coulda been them, or him or both.
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

Of the cartridges I've worked up loads for in Encores, the 460 S&W Magnum was the one I had to work the hardest for to get good groups with.  I tried a number of powders and bullets with less than satisfactory results.  I finally had success though; the above approximately 1.5 inch group was shot at 200 yards with my braked Encore handgun with a 15 inch barrel.

I used that gun for hunting in South Africa last year and took Zebra, Red Hartebeest, European Fallow Deer, Impala, Cape Grysbuck, Klipspringer (at 180 yards) and more with it.

Good job Grumulkin!  The careful load testing really paid off. ;D   The Hornady SST/ML with no cannelure, what method did you use to crimp the bullet?  Also the OAL looks like the bullet is seated out close to the lands.  Did your load with 2400 use large rifle primers or LR Magnum primers?

I really like the Encore and hope to approach your level of accuracy with the .460 S&W.
Thanks, Eddie
