Broken MCA adapter
« on: July 04, 2009, 01:17:10 PM »
I have a T/C Contender with a broken adapter neck stuck in the chamber. >:(
357 Herrett to 9mm.When I tried to extract it it broke off leaving the 1/4" above the shoulder stuck in the barrel. :-[

I have tried pushing a lead bullet down the tube, and a Hoppes lead remover brass screen rubber plug gizmo, nothing.

Does anyone have any more ideas? ???
I thought about a eyeglass screwdriver to raise the part  enough to get a lead bullet to "bite" but worry about the chamber getting scratched. It is thin, but steel not brass.

A tight bronze bore brush and a good soaking of Kroil may pull it out if you reverse it before it's all the way thru.

As a last ditch effort a tap, use a fine thread, can be inserted and turned lightly into the casing to solidly grab the case. Use a tap that will not enter the neck but will grab the inside of the case behind the shoulder. A vise-grip on the tap and a hmmer to gently tap the pliers to remove the casing,.. Try the less dangerous first.

Thanks guys for the reply.

I thought about a screw extractor.

Not sure if I was clear this is just a short piece of steel,if it was a brass case it would only be the length of the neck where the bullet would be seated, not the whole case.It seperated at the neck upon extraction.

A screw extractor will only press the piece out harder into the neck.  I would also go for a fine thread tap, figure out the inside diameter of the stuck piece and find a tap to fit, it may be metric.  Larry

I would like to stress t6hat the tap is final solution and must be done with utmost care.. Scratching of the chamber is very possible and hard to remidy. Try the oversized brush inserted from the breech and then pulled backwards. The bristles will fold to allow the passage of the brush into the bore but will then be angled such that moving the brush to the rear they will act against the front edge of the neck. Kroil would be a good first step to loosen any bond between the chamber and the neck piece. Pulling the brush to the rear will be difficult and you may have to resort to a rod from the muzzle and a rubber mallet,, I seriously doubt you'l have much luck trying to pick the part out without scratching the chamber. If you have cerrosafe you could pour a long chamber cast(include a bit of the bore) and the errant piece will come out with the cast..

PS--the best way to determine the tap to use is with a expandable plug gauge, just insert, expand, remove and measure.

I got it out,finnaly! ;D

I had to sharpen a small brass rod and peel it out from the chamber end.
It was so thin it was easier than I feared.Best of all no damages to barrel.

Thanks for the advice!
