ANYONE HUNTED UNIT 61??
« on: July 04, 2009, 02:30:16 PM »
Well after 13 years, I finally drawn unit 61. I was wondering if anyone had hunted this unit that would be willing to share some "hot spots"?

Thanks

The best I can do is tell you I hunted the southern most end of that unit east of Norwood off of hiway 149 going north. yoou need to have some maps handy to see where public/private land lays but I saw some real wall-hangers in there. I would definitely scout what ever area I was going into ahead of season if possible. These buggers didn't get that big by being stupid and it can be rough going in some spots. make sure you bring some good glass with you. ;)
Deceased due to a 3rd stroke on Dec. 12, 2011.

RIP John.

If you haven't already done so, drop by bowsite.  You'll get much better info there on specific unit questions.  If you're unaware of bowsite send me a PM since I'm not sure about the rules on refering to another website...

nr,

What sort of beast did you draw a tag for and what season?  Those would make a difference in where to hunt.  I drew 2nd season buck.  we live about 35 miles form the north end of 61 and head up there a lot to camp since there are few mosquitos.  I'd rather have a bull tag, if that's what you have drawn you are in for a treat.

beanman,

That's exactly what I drew. Muzzleloader bull. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated as I have never been to the unit. Feel free to pm if you like, or if its easier, pm me and i'll give you my number.

Thanks

Nr,

You are one lucky Dude, I'd kill for that tag.  You are really going to have fun.  You should have multiple opportunities at 300-330 bulls.  If you are lucky and have the lungs and legs to get into the nasty oakbrush and steep canyons without ATV access you might find one bigger.  Unit 61 dosen't have as big a bulls as maybe 2, 201, and 10 but it has lots of very good bulls and few hunters.  Start gettting yourself in shape now or you will regret it. You will want to have an ATV since that will allow you to access quickly many different trail sytems and drainages quickly from a central camp location.  Drainages to consider would be Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood Creeks and Tabeguache Creeks.  If you have people with you you can be dropped off on the divide road and hunt your way down to be picked up at the bottom if you decide to hunt the Cottonwoods area.  It would be an all day affair.

I'll let you know how my summer scouting goes,

Bean
