I have a silver 3x9x40MM on a thunderhawk 50 cal. never ever had any problems. The thunderhawk has seen some heavy charges of BP 120 grains loose 3F and a 375 graind buffalo HPBT lead bullet.
I have this now almost 6 years and it has never failed me.
I did purchase a gold a while back never had any luck with it I did return it for a refund

I have a 6-18x40 silver series.  It needs a little better coating on the ocular lens.  It has some flare and glare, but overall a great scope for my 17m2 H&R.  Also have a 6-24x44 gold series on my 308 that seems like a great scope for the $$ I paid, which I think was around 140.  The gold series is supposed to have coil springs that tension the adjustments, they are supposed to be more repeatable.  Don't know for sure, just sighted it in and it has held it's settings.

The gold series is okay, but in that price range (or actually in the next price range higher up), I would get a Bushnell Elite 3200 or Nikon Buckmaster.

A friend has a 3 x 9 X and it adjustments are 1 " clicks, not 1/4". I would not own one for that reason. Check before you buy, I don`t know if they are all like that or not.
