7.5x55 trouble
« on: July 06, 2009, 08:13:37 AM »
I am having trouble loading for my k31. I need to find a bullet with a long ogive so I do not have to have most of the bullet stuffed inside the case. On my rifle the rifling begins just .060 inch past the case mouth and most bullets loaded in a normal fashion will impact the rifling and prevent the bolt from closing. Who makes a bullet like that? Something close to a GP11 in profile.

Realguns has a good article on handloading for the K31.

bpBill,

I have a K31 that I reload for and load SGKs but at a much reduced overall length (i.e. 2.925") due to the short throat in my rifle, too.  I don't want to hi-jack your thread because I also want the guys answer to your question about a substitute bullet close to the GP11 profile.

But I picked up something in quickdtoo (Tim's) link that I have been told otherwise!?  That Hornady "New Dimension Die Set" set the shoulder back fully to the original cartridge spec (18 thousands! from 0.477" to 0.459").  I was told the Hornady ND dies resized to the chamber specs not the cartridge specs!?

I used this link as a reference before loading for the K31.  http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2006/swissreloading1/index.asp
Don't have any load data in front of me right now, so can't help as to bullet selection ect.
You might also want to post on the Swiss Rifle board, http://theswissriflesdotcommessageboard.yuku.com/directory

I've used a 165gr. SPBT of unknown mfg., repackaged by Midway, with good results.  COL used was 2.950".
