Primer questions...
« on: July 07, 2009, 07:10:58 AM »
I don't reload now but I can buy supplies... I'm in Germany and don't have my reloading license so...  I'll have my FIL start checking around for me.

What size primers would I need for the following?

.223
.6mm Rem
.308 Win
.30-'06
6.8 SPC
.45-70

.357 Mag
.45 ACP

Ohhh, I forgot.  These would be for run of the mill loads, not anything pushing the envelope.

Thanks in advance...

Thanks GB...  I'm putting in my orders today...  Maybe I can work on buying supplies a little at a time.

Since you will have your bases covered with Large and Small Rifle Primers anyway, this should really not matter but there are two choices on the 6.8 SPC primer size, Large or Small.  I found the following info for unprimed 6.8 SPC brass on the Silver State Armory site:

http://www.ssarmory.com/68spcunprimedbrasscaseslargeprimer.aspx

http://www.ssarmory.com/68spcunprimedbrasscases.aspx

In the FAQ section of the SSA site:

11.  Q:  Is there any benefit to using a Large Rifle Primer over a Small Rifle Primer?

A:  Standard Deviation (SD) have a better result for Small primer 6.8SPC rifle cartridges than for Large primer 6.8SPC rifle cartridges. But a large rifle primer will have a velocity advantage of around 50 FPS. It is not uncommon for a small primer case to have SD's in the low teens to single digits whereas a large primer case will give a SD in the 20's or into the 30's.

What is Standard Deviation (SD) in terms of ballistics?  Standard Deviation is a simple measure of the variability or dispersion of a data set, or in the case of ballistics, a group of bullet holes.  A low standard deviation indicates that all of the bullet holes are very close to target, while high standard deviation indicates that the bullet holes are "spread out" over a large range.

Okay... now for my ignorance...  I'm ass-u-meing that large rifle and small rifle primers are different sizes, right?  How does that work?  Will they both fit the brass or what?

Yes, they are different sizes. They are not interchangable.
The Silver State Armory makes their 6.8SPC brass in either size, Large Rifle or Small Rifle.

Remington 6.8SPC brass is made with the Large Rifle Primer pocket
Hornady 6.8SPC brass is made with the Small Rifle Primer pocket

for the 6mm Remington, try Federal Bench Rest large rifle primers, IMR 4350, and Hornday 95 grain SST bullets. Remington or Hornady cases.

Small primers (rifle or pistol) measure 0.175 inch in diameter.

Large primers (rifle or pistol) measure 0.210 inch in diameter.

The benefit of a LR primer is that it is much easier to get these days than a SR primer.....lol

I assume that most SR primers are going to .223 loads, which in general are the cheapest factory rifle loads you can buy. Strange times.
