Soft spoken Handi
« on: July 07, 2009, 11:48:01 AM »
Fella's I have had a coyote or two around my neighborhood for a while.  Just catch a glimpse every now and again.  I live in town and in a dense area, so shooting is not only illegal, but hard to manage without risk of harm to others.  Today at lunch my little dog began growling like something was about, and looking out the back a coyote was helping himself to my cat's food.  I rather quickly grabbed my Handi .357, loaded a .38 wadcutter and came to the door.  I eased the door open as quietly as I could, but not without him noticing.  From ten feet away he made no move to run leaving me a perfect shot angling down into the ground.  I took the shot.

We've had so many fireworks going off the last few days, that apparently no one noticed.  I was lucky this time.  One less coyote, and a Handi that speaks softly.  Out of a handgun that same round would have alarmed everyone............

Yeah, but you also stopped the cat thief!  It just goes to prove there is a downside to everything. ;D

Gotta love any story that ends up with a dead coyote. Reload or factory ammo? Specs would be good. How do you think it would have turned out if it was not around 4th of July? How close are the houses together? Do you back onto woods or greenery, or other houses?

mechanic - what are your loads? Nice shooting, BTW. Does the deed so to speak, doesn't it?

I have loaded up some wad cutters for back yard pests. I am using a Hornady 148 grain HBWC with 2.6 grains of Bullseye and a Rem 1 1/2 primer. I am getting 770 fps at 15 feet. They are quiet, out of a 22" 357 barrel and around 3/4" at 50 yards. I can step out the back door and make a shot in the middle of the night and it does not even wake up my wife, who wakes up for about any thing. I like it better than a 22 rimfire, because it is just as quiet as a subsonic (maybe quieter) and has more punch. I am thinking it would be a good squirrel round. Not much destruction on the squirrel (just a clean .357" hole with out surrounding meat damage) and the bullet will not travel as far as a 22 rimfire, just have to limit my shots to 50 yards and under. Beyond 50 yards, the bullet drop is a bunch.

I have only a drive way between me an the neighbor on the left.  There is a wood privacy fence between me an the other neighbors, but the one on the left and I have to be buddies we're so close.  Truth be told, he would have done the same thing.  I'm using loads identical to LaOtto's except I cast my own 148gr. wadcutters with gas check.  Yote felt no pain  as the bullet passed through her brain.  She had a litter somewhere, or at least was still nursing.  These critters multiply like rabbits.  The local animal control  will come and put out a trap with some meat in it.  The Yotes will get the meat out and the trap will be unsprung.  Smart animals.  This one just got too used to humans and showed no fear.

I think a person could almost get a way with a full auto in Calera, OK for the 2 weeks leading up to and about 2 or 3 days after the 4th.

Good job on the coyote.

Funny you should post this!  Kathie told me last night it was on the news that someone in Cobb County had shot a coyote.  Then she said "I didn't think you could fire a gun in Cobb County."   :)  I'm still looking for details... Maybe it was you!   :D

Nah...I'm farther south.  Can't shoot here either, but if that coyote got my wife's little dog it would be to her like losing a child.  I'll shoot if need be, and pay the fine if I have to.  I had begun to think the cat was gone, but she showed back up today.

Even if it were not so close to the 4th, one shot would probably go un noticed or at least un reported.  It's hard to tell exactly where the sound came from without followups to home in on.  Unless someone happened to be looking at the 'yote and saw it happen you would likely just 'slip under the radar'.

Good work.  Neighborhood predators need more thinning.  The 38 through a long barrel is a great choise too.  Effective, not too loud.  As long as the shot is down into the ground like yours was, it's as safe as a gunshot is going to be.
