I have a S&W Victory model 10
« on: July 08, 2009, 04:53:16 PM »
I just recieved a S&W Victory Model 10, I was hoping someone may be able to give me some info on the weapon . The Serial is V639XXX . It's a two inch snubnose with the thumbnail sight and white Ivory/Woodgrain grips, it also has the square butt bottom. Ive yet to fire the gun since recieving it. Im hoping that once I start shooting with this gun it doesn't win over my Glock! Any info would be appreciated. thanx

They are great old guns. Just make sure if its a .38 S&W Special or .38 S&W, two very different calibers. Both calibers were made during WW2 for many allied forces. They were also issued to security teams at US manufacturing plants and post offices throughout the war. If the grips are white, they aren't original. Originals grips were simply plain wood, and the gun's finish was usually parkerized, not blued.

Mohawk is on the button, the only Victory Models that I have come across (2 or 3) have been chambered for 38 S&W.  One person told me he had one reamed out for 38 Special.  I do not think this is a safe modifcation.

Siskiyou:  you are correct about the modification of a 38 S&W to a 38 Special - it is not safe.  I have shot some of those older Victory Models in the 38 S&W caliber and made the mistake of using 38 Specials only to have them split the cases and blow gases back at me.  The 38 Special is a straight wall case, the 38 S&W is tapered and larger at the base than the 38 Spl.

Most of those revolvers modified were bored straight through the chambers to lengthen them to take the 38 Spl.  The bore of the 38 S&W runs to .360 or slightly larger and your .357-.358 38 Specials do not shoot worth a darn.

Also, there have been fools who have shot 357s through those modified 38 S&W Victory Models as the chambers were bored straight through and htey would accept the longer 357 case - those revolvers usually blew apart or just stopped working after one round or two.

When I left S.E. Asia for the last time I left two full loaded boxes of 357s with some Thai police I did not like - they carried Victory Models in 38 S&W but didn't know I didn't like them - I did not stick around for the after action report.............

Most I have seen also were the .38 S&W variety. But lately, a couple .38 Special versions(factory chambered) have turned up, one
on auction and another at a local gun store. The revolver that Lee Harvey Oswald used to kill Dallas Police Officer Tippet with was a Victory .38 S&W converted to special. But, as has been said, the rifling marks on the bullets recovered were uneven and shallow due to the difference in bore size.

I think the recent Handloader Magazine had some modern reloading data for the 38 S&W and a comparison with the 38 Super.  In case your Victory is a 38 S&W you should be able to build proper loads for it.
