Buffalo Classic accuracy
« on: July 09, 2009, 10:02:42 AM »
I continue to be amazed at the accuracy of these guns. It's outfitted with a Williams receiver sight on the rear and a Lyman globe front using the post insert. I had my daughter at the range with her 22 so I was shooting at 50yds. It doesn't seem to matter cast or jacketed using powders from Alliant 2400 to H4198 to Varget to Reloader 7 it's just a tack driver. Not an internet tack driver, but a real at the range tack driver. This is a sample target from today of 4 shots using a new load with 32gr of RL7 and a 405gr Remington JSP.
I couldn't be happier with this firearm and I cannot see how a $2500 Sharps could shoot any better. (No offense to the Sharps owners, they are very nice firearms.)  - Don

Good shootin, Don!! ;) Now ya know why the 45-70 H&R is so popular and why I have 5 of em!! The target below was shot at 100yds with my scoped BC.

I always wanted one of those rifles, but it just never made its way to the top of the list when it came time to buy.  With that kind of range report you got me thinking about it again!

Mine can hit water filled things such as jugs of water, coffee cans, possums, rabbits, balloons, cactuses, etc. out to 50 yards so I'm happy.

Isn't there some king of a flip up tang sight just for the Buffalo hunters for longer range shooting?

Also very nice shooting Quick!! And at 100yds no less. BTW what is your favorite powder/bullet combination. (I noticed H322 listed on your target) So far RL7 and Varget with Remington 405 JSP seem to have a slight edge in the accuracy dept. over some cast bullet loads I'm using (31.5gr H4198 under Precision Cast 405gr LRN.) but by only by fractions of an inch. I've also had good luck with 21gr of 2400 with a .5gr poly batting filler and the 405 cast. Nice shooting and really low recoil.  - Don

My favorite for 300gr jacketed is H4198, I've used it with Nosler Partitions and the Barnes TSX-FB with excellent results using modern rifle(Ruger) data, I'm not one to "plink" tho.  ;D

thanks,

Tim

56 grain H4198 (mid level lever load from Hodgdon) gave me 2300 fps from a 300 grain JHP in an 18.5" barrel for me.  Data goes to 60 grains for lever guns, and up for Rugers!  I'd expect 2500-2600 fps from any longer barrel.  That's NEARLY 338 Lapua territory.  However, the BC sucks.

sarco mould 255 FP I think then the load was about 30 grains of IMR3031
I now load 33.5 of 3031 with the williams FP sight no problem out to 500 yards
The picture was from the bench at 65 or 75 yards it been awhile to remember

You'll be disappointed, 56.6gr H4198 and the 300gr Nosler Partition does 2425fps in one of my 22" Handis, same load does 2450fps in the BC.  ::)

I really hope by BC you were referring to Ballistic Coefficient and not Buffalo Classic or otherwise I'm going to fetch the tar, feathers, and rail to ride you out of town on.  >:(

However my finely tuned ability of deciphering context clues is telling me you were referring to the coefficient. Just sounds like border line fight'n words as written. I think your lust for a Ruger #1 could be effecting your typing ability.  ;D

I was indeed referring to the ballistic coefficient.  I am abstaining from any large guns right now, as I am getting my 338 Lapua improved built and it will cost about $5000 ready to shoot.

Holy cow folks, those are some stout loads! At this point the gun is target only so those loads would be nasty for an afternoon at the bench. I did take some 405's to 1400fps and that was the limit for me at the bench and not very pleasant to shoot. Extremely accurate though using 45gr Varget with the 405 Rem JSP. The steel butt plate is the limiting factor but I want to keep the gun stock at this point. Also a 405 at 1200fps will easily take a buffalo. Thanks for all the info. - Don

A nice leather slip on will solve the bench problems.  ;)

I'm not sure a slip-on pad will make bench sessions with real hot 45-70 totally care-free, especially with optics, but will certainly help.  I gotta watch my face or my little Guide Gun will scope me no matter what I do, it comes back super fast with stiff loads.

If the pad isn't enough, adding weight or a mercury recoil reducer in the stock bolt hole works even better, that's what I used along with a Past Magnum shoulder pad before I bought the Lead Sled.  ;)
