Should I even be considering this?
« on: July 09, 2009, 04:47:35 PM »
I know that a bolt face can be opened up to accept a cartridge with a larger rim.  What can be done to go the other way.  I am considering taking a rifle in 6.5x300 weatherby and making it a 220 swift.  I know why right.  I don't see any purpose for the 6.5 and want a heavy barrel single shot 220 swift.  This a heavy bench rifle with a mauser single shot action, laminated thumbhole stock with 6 inch forend, and target trigger.  Does the bolt have to be replaced and is that cost effective?  Thank you for taking the time to read this and helping out.

I just reduced a Steyr to a 30-30 boot head size, it isn't very hard to do.  Larry

Since the rifles a 98 mauser which makes bolts fairly easy to find, the most cost effective way to change would be to replace the bolt. The headspace has to be set in the re-barrel anyway. Changing a bolt face to a smaller size is a much more costly process than simply buying a replacement, as long as the action is a standard 98. A good friend brought a commercial mauser to me to be rebarreled. He was looking for a 35 Whelan. I owed him some money and paid it off with a barrel installed by another friend who owned a reamer.. When I went to install the barreled action into a stock I realized it was an intermediate length action...and the 35 Whelan won't feed from such a thing,, at least not with a lot of work.. Finding a bolt w/extractor shouldn't be too expenseive.. Good luck on the project, I love the Swift and have 2 just now. One a Ruger No.1V is a wonderfull piece if not the most accurate I've ever owned..It needs more load work, I think.. The other was a Pre-64 M70 that had a trigger job at some point. The job was incorrectly done and the safety was made inoperable. Because of that I got a great deal, but still have to fixed the problem, so don't know how it shoots..

trotterlg -- How'd you do that? Looks like you welded the bolt face up and remachined.. How'd you keep the lugs from annealing?

No, the way I did it was to do like you would bush a fireing pin but use a "top hat" type of bushing.  The bushing is pressed in and the rim is given .002 clearance above the outter bolt face that is machined down.  Then soft soldered to hold every thing is place.  This is a picture of the bolt head before the bushing is put in place and a side view after it is installed.    Larry

All these years and I never even thought of that.. I've bushed firing pins but the whole casehead recess??  That is an excellant solution and the heat from the softsolder shouldn't cause any problems at all... If machined tightly even a bit of thread locker would work.. Dang!! you proved even an old dog can still be taught new tricks.. But what really bothers me is how I over looked such a logical fix...
