How stinky are bake on finishes?
« on: September 24, 2003, 08:13:19 PM »
I am thinking of trying one of Brownells bake on finishes, either Gun Kote or the bake on enamel. How bad do they smell in the oven? I have a baby and my wife will kick my butt if she comes home and the kitchen smells like a chemical factory! Does the smell go away pretty quickly with the oven door open and the windows open?
Also if you have tried both which do you like better and why? I'm looking for an alternative to cold bluing which works fine for me but thought I'd try something a little more durable.
Thanks in advance for your opinion and iput!

I've used baking lacquer and there is a deffinate smell.  Not as bad at the baking step but worst at the spraying step..  For alloy or rough use weapons or for a finish mainly for durability I use powder coating..  It is very reasonably priced and is extremely durable..  Very difficult to remove if you change your mind..  Also there are powders available such as the hammertone finishes that add to the stealthy appearance of the weapon...

finishes ? I don't think Brownell's has that. Can you do it in a home workshop? Can you do powder coating without a large expensive oven?

The powder coat I do is done by a large commercial coating firm that just happens to be owned by a relative and close friend.  There are powder coating guns available that are fairly reasonable in price and any oven large enough to hold the workpiece and bring it to 400 degreesF is quite sufficient.  There is almost no odor and the material is quite inert.  It doesn't come from a spray can and the tool cost to do a single weapon would probably not be justifieable, but if several are contemplated, perhaps..  It provides a very durable finish that will hide some roughness.
