Contender G2 barrel length question
« on: July 10, 2009, 05:16:49 PM »
I recently purchased an older but seemingly NIB G2 Contender Rifle (model 1239 marked on box) that was supposed to have a 23 inch, .22LR, Match barrel with no sights that actually has a Thompson, 21 inch, .22LR, Match barrel with both front and rear Thompson sights.  The barrel also appears to have their high luster blue finish.  If not high luster then certainly standard blue but not the mat finish.

I cannot find any listings of a 21 inch barrel being provided from Thompson for a G2 rifle.  The rifle had been on the shelf since early 2006 and possibly longer.  Everything I can find indicates that a 21 inch barrel was provided for the original Contender rather than the G2.

Is anyone aware of the G2 having been provided with a 21 inch barrel other than through the custom shop.  The box does not have any "Custom Shop" markings that I can find and the pre-printed label clearly states that it was supposed to be a model 1239.  The serial number field is blank on that label but the correct serial number is on another Thompson label that was partially covered by the previously mentioned model identifier label.  Peelng back the corner of the top label you can see the words "Muzzleloader Frame" underneath.

The rifle looks very good and shoots quite well so I am not chasing a problem.  Just trying to determine its probable origin.  There was no indication that the rifle had ever been fired and only a very small amount of wear where the wood forearm rubs the receiver.  No more wear than you would expect from people having looked at it on the rack over the last 3 years.

For $499 it seemed to be a good buy.   Any information or even guesses will be appreciated.

I'll bet the barrel that came with the frame was sold and a new, but older, barrel was put on the frame.  You could call T/C for a more definitive answer.

No doubt your Model 1239 SB a G2 blued/walnut 23" 22LRM rifle complete.

Also no doubt the 21" tappered barrel with open sights is an older Contender barrel.

You sure the frame is a G2 and not a Contender too?

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

What Ladobe says may be right as I have seen a older contender with easy open frame one of the later mod. and the vender at the gun show swares it is a G2 and not a regular contender has an extra barrel and he has been trying to get 775 for it for over 2 years. I told him it is not a G2 but he will not change his mind. explained the difference has a mind set on unloading it on someone who does not know the difference. A G2 looks like a smaller version of Encore has the same looking frame only a bit smaller.

Yep, it is a G2 frame for sure.  It does look like the barrel was swapped though.  The barrel shoots good and has very nice polished blueing so no foul as far as I am concerned.  Both the frame and the barrel appeared to be unfired and none of the internal documentation packages had been opened when I purchased it.  There were no marks on the wood either.  For $499 it is a good deal.

Thanks for the comments concerning the vintage of the barrel.
