Pics of 22K Hornet + range report
« on: July 11, 2009, 04:25:01 AM »
I have a stub project in 22K Hornet. I has a Douglas premium barrel - 20"

Here are some pics of the rifle

Here are a couple pics of groups shot. The first was from a clean cold barrel. The second was right after the first. It seems to like a clean barrel. Groups deteriorated after getting fouled, but I also discovered much oil on the latch and shelf - so that might have some thing to do with it.

I shot a three shot group at about .4" at 100 yards in another session. It was out of a clean barrel - the load was 13.5 grains of 1680 under a Hornady 45 grain Hornet bullet. It seems to shoot about any thing well. That is what I have found when you have a quality barrel. Hopefully it will get to the point of shooting well out of a dirty barrel after some more shots down the tube. Over all I am pretty happy with it.

Nice looking rifle. Looks like a good shooter too. I'm going to look into the K for a Hornet cart. I think it's a better design for the cart. Have fun with it.

I wasn't looking for more velocity, I was looking for more case life. Not too bad for "cheap" Midsouth bullets (34 grain and 50 grain);). It may do even better with a premium bullet.  I think it will do fine. ;)

Tim - I think it will eventually settle in and be a consistent .5" performer. It is a heavy one; the barrel is full size for it's entire length - 1.060"

Richard - Yes it is the one we were talking about in OK. I wanted to have it in time for the PD shoot this year. Just did not happen soon enough. I got it soon after we got back. It took a little while to fire form some cases and to develop some loads. It does look like it will shoot most any thing well and the cases look like they will last a long while.

Marv - I think it will do fine for up to 200 yards on them thar PD's ifn' the wind ain't a-howln' ;)

I have been shooting the Midway dogtown 34 grainers in my Hornet and I find them as acurate or better than the 35 G vMax. They seem to POP on critters really well also.

Looks very nice!!!

I K'd my NEF short lil pencil barrel syn stock... Make for a great truck gun... It shot good as a 22 hornet and after K'ing it the thing didn't shoot much better but maybe more consistent.... I really like the K-version, did it to a CZ too

Thank You everyone for your interest and comments. I think the K is one of the better improved cases. Some improvement in performance, but much better for cases and I think it adds just a little for accuracy as well. Anyone wanting to know more about this stub project can PM me. There is lots more to talk about - bedding, the way the fore end fastens to the barrel, fire forming loads, where I got it done, twist rate, crown etc.
