Trap dying problems

I have been trapping for a few years and have unde the speed dip on my conisand footholds.  Icould not get anty for this year and had to use a liquid type.  I used the method of doluted muratic acid to clean them.   After they rusted good I dyed them.  They turned out nice.  About 3 hours later I waxed them and some of the dye in spots came off.  What should I do to prevent this from happining?

Sorry Tim, I've never used wax with speed dip...only with boiled logwood or similar dyes. I've never heard of anyone waxing speed dipped traps around here either.

i bet the dip was not dry and the wax pulled it off , wait at least a week then wax

50, hang in there!  There is a convention this weekend and the OLD CODGER (boggy) and the VERY OLD codger RdFx are probably out tryin to catch trappers :cry:   I'm pretty sure that one of those two will have your answer.  

I only ever speed dip.  I don't understand the use of Muratic acid to remove the dip; Its been my experience that the acid only hits the exposed metal.  Any place the dip is bonded stays dipped.  You can wax over dipped traps.  Just boil them in soap, lye or in some other way clean them before waxing.  I just don't know what is, or why it is, flacking off for you.

Now correct me if I am wrong,but you couldnt get dip so you used a liquid dye???? I think sleepy creek had or has a liquid dye you mix with water,I have never used this type of dye.I have used Blackies steel coat dip for many years.
 I believe the guys were right though,your traps were not completely dry before you waxed--or did you melt your wax on top of the water??this often gives a poor and uneven wax job.  Tom

You said you used muriatic acid to clean.  Did you flush or put traps in a baking soda solution to nullify the acid?   Its possible that that some acid was still on trap and when you waxed it the acid was still there working and  thus the spotting.  Or like Bog said if you did the wax on top of water   then that possibly is problem.  We can only speculate .  Ive had speed dipped traps that i used muriatic acid on to take majority of dip off but some stayed on  sticking like glue.  I put traps in a baking soda water solution and then rinsed in clean water.  I let THOUROUGHLY  dry then i waxed and no problems.  Keep us posted so we can   fix yr problem.
