Reduced 44Mag loads for cast bullet
« on: July 12, 2009, 05:15:27 AM »
I found a recipe for 44Mag on the Alliant site using 7gr of Unique on a cast 240grn SWC.  When I throw my charge the brass is only about half full, do I need to put a filler of some type between the powder and bullet to facilitate the powder ignition, or do I not need to worry about it.  I'm using Win large pistol/mag primers.  Thanks JR

Nope - no filler needed , I've used as little as 10 grains of Unique in 45/70 cases with out a problem , just remember that when using loads that fill less than 1/2 of the case , there is a chance you could double charge one --  So be alert -- other than that , they should shoot just fine .

Thanks for the info stimpy.  Going to go load few and try out some of my new cast bullets, first try at casting, and I'm very satisfied with the way they turned out. JR

There have been test done when using powders that do not fill cases.  Unique was one of them.  significant velocity & presure change from powder forward in case and powder against primer.  Guess that is why old timers pointed there guns up between each shot! 8)  Trail Boss was created to give cast bullets a load that would fill the case enough to stop the chance of double charge asnd still be safe.  Imr lists the low to high with Trail Boss.  I have shot it in my TC 10 inch .44 and it is great.  About 975fps and no leading & shoots clean. 8)  Oh and case filled to just below bullet.
