Rolling Block 32/40 help please

I was at my favorite gunshop and they have a Rolling block that has a bull barrel in 32/40...I don't have any pics yet...but I am trying to get a value on it... the wood looks ok...has sling swivels on the barrel and stock...it had been browned by somebody and they tried to poish it and removed most of the finish...  the only marking I can find on the barrel is 32-40 stamped on the underside... they have $1250 marked on it...I told them no way and they told me to make them an offer...what would something like that go for??? Not knowing who the maker is... thanks Robbie

It sure sounds like a gun that someone put together, other than the factory.
Before I paid even shooter value for one, I'd be sure to cross the "T's" & dot the "I's" when inspecting the RB action, as to exactly which one it is, and if it had the firing pin properly bushed (for safety).

The .32-40 is probably not an issue, pressure-wise, given proper headspace and an uncracked block lower half at the axle - something to take into account if you can't take it apart or to a gunsmith for a look-see.

Lotsa different rolling blocks were made as best as I recall. To establish a real world price it is important to know WHICH of them this is.

If I were you, I would take a few deep breaths, and consider:

Value, even shooter value = zero, until it's checked out as safe.

Realistically, how much reduction could be expected from a $1250 asking price ? 50% ?  I don't think so.

BUT............. consider that half - $625 - and then also consider:

This fella's got a known RB action you can get for $325, slap a barrel & stock onto, and be shooting a "known" safe rifle - even a .32-40 if that's what you want, for less than $625.

I'd have to go with Rangr44 at this point. Without seeing the markings especially on the top tang and whatever else is present you could be getting someone's else's problems.Just for the heck of it check the simpson's web site and see what they are getting for a 8mm danish rolling block and check out the pics. Also do some surfing at the various auction sites and get a feel for what rolling blocks are going for. I'd really hate to see you spend big bucks and then find out that your purchase did not live up to your expectations. Been there, done that, and do not want the tee shirt. There more you know the better informed you will be and able to feel more confident in your purchase. Some years back got wind of a deal involving at 303 british martini. When I finally saw it just walked away. Receiver looked to be crudely made, side walls were not the same thickness and stock was good for fire wood. Frank
