September Moose Hunt over for us - Hurray
« on: September 25, 2003, 05:30:23 AM »
:-D We only had one hunter in this week and are we glad.  The moose are not moving much, it is way too warm (almost 70) every day, they won't come to calls, etc.  We did see 4 bulls Sunday while scouting, Monday nothing, Tuesday saw a bull and a cow, too far for a show, and yesterday just by sheer luck, we harvested a very nice 880 bull with a 34" spread.  Just too hard this time of year.  Good luck to everyone next hunt.

My hunt doesn't start 'till the third week of October. I wouldn't want to hunt in that heat.
Still have flies?

One of the things we suggest hunters bring with them is the biggest container of pepper they can find.  We sat out Monday evening and the mosquitoes and midgies (noseeems) were horrible.  I had sprayed myself and still had to fan my head with a fern.  Cutting up the meat is terrible with the flies and we are on the lake with a good breeze.

I went on a camping expedition to prime moose country with my wife the last few days for our 25th wedding anniversary. Didn't see any moose, but did see rain, sleet, hail, and snow. Just about blew our tent outa the bush.
There were a few sunny breaks, and we did get in a few miles of paddle and portage in Killarney provincial park on the north shore of Georgian bay. Hiked the white quartzite ridges of the LaCloche range a bit too. Fantastic scenery.
Two weeks to the moose hunt! Looks like it's gonna be a cold one. No flies of any kind here now.

John Y:

Quit countin them chickens.

All you need is a couple of warm days to begin hatching those black flies, and in a couple more warm ones they're outright annoying.

I've seen snow during the moose hunt and I've been fighting the black flies three weeks later during the second week of deer.

It would be nice if it stayed cold enough to knock the leaves off the trees - we don't want a repeat of last year.

We could go up early, and shake the trees.  :-D

I've had black flies buzzing in my face when I used to hunt north of Sudbury, but they never got to the biting stage. Snow collapsed our tent up there one year. We started lashing saplings to all the poles after that. 12" of snow sure mad a greasy mess to walk in around camp.
Bunch of yellow spots appeared in the snow too. Musta been interesting, because every one of them had a set of footprints in front.

Those leaves cost me at least one deer last year, couldn't see it. Just as well, I don't think the boys would have been too happy if I'd shot four. I've been ragging them enough having shot three.
