Bare 527 Actions Available?
« on: July 13, 2009, 05:39:32 AM »
I thought I read a while back that someone offered bare and/or "scratch-n-dent" 527 actions for a reasonable cost. Is there any truth to that? I've really become enamoured with my carbine and I'd like to build a few other (6.5 Grendel) conversion 527s... I just can't see buying full rifles if I'm just going to pitch the stock and barrel anyway.

Hooz,

Not sure about the used or dented ones, but CZ does indeed offer just the 527 receiver as an option. I've seen them listed on GunBroker many times. In fact, here's one now: ;)

I actually saw that one, but I'm looking for the 7.62x39 bolt face. By the time I buy the .223 action and buy a new bolt assembly, I might as well have bought a whole rifle and thrown the barrel and stock away (not a big resale market for CZ Carbine stocks and barrels).

I think you've found the difficulty:

When a manufacturer sells just the receivers for common/popular rifles, it always seems as though you can get a whole rifle for very, very little more money.  If you can get anything at all for the stock and/or barrel, you're almost money ahead in many cases.

My guess is (and it's only a pure guess) that the bare receivers are rarely or never discounted, or maybe just not discounted very much, from list price by the few folks who sell them.  OTOH, whole rifles are frequently discounted heavily from list price.  Maybe that's not it, but it's my story and I'm sticking with it!  :)
